The decision, announced in the club’s official retained list, marks the end of Nakamba’s brief stint at Hillsborough and signals a major reset after a difficult Championship campaign that ended in relegation.

The 32-year-old midfielder arrived in February on a free transfer following his departure from Luton Town, but struggled to settle in a side that battled instability throughout the season.

Now, he departs alongside several experienced names as Wednesday reshape the squad from top to bottom.

A CLEAR SIGNAL OF REBUILD

The Owls confirmed a mix of retained players, contract extensions, new offers, and departures, with the list highlighting the scale of change underway at the club.

Dominic Iorfa’s exit stands out after seven years and more than 200 appearances, while multiple senior and fringe players also move on as contracts expire.

Nakamba’s departure is among the most notable, given his Premier League experience with Aston Villa and his role as captain of the Zimbabwe national team.

NAKAMBA’S SHORT HILLSBOROUGH SPELL

Marvelous Nakamba joined Sheffield Wednesday in February after leaving Luton Town, arriving as an experienced midfield option expected to bring composure and leadership.

However, the club’s relegation battle limited his influence, and his stay ultimately lasted only a few months.

Despite his pedigree in the Premier League with Aston Villa, Nakamba became part of a wider clear-out as Wednesday reset for life in England’s third tier.

REBUILD UNDERWAY

The retained list reflects a club in transition, balancing continuity with significant departures as it attempts to rebuild competitiveness and identity in League One.

While several players have been retained or offered new deals, the volume of exits underlines the scale of change required after a disappointing season.

For Wednesday, the focus now shifts to recruitment and stabilisation.

For Nakamba, it is another turning point in a career that has taken him across Europe, with his next move yet to be confirmed.

What is clear is that Hillsborough will look very different next season.

The Owls did not mention Warriors versatile player Sean Fusire who is currently with the Warriors squad in England ahead of the Unity Cup scheduled to begin next week on the 26th. The club only announced that he was called for national duty, a statement that signals that he will likely be retained for the new season.
