The latest update is likely to bring relief to many Zimbabweans in the diaspora who have spent weeks waiting for their travel documents amid growing demand for passports linked to work permits, travel, banking services, school registrations and immigration compliance in South Africa.
According to the Consulate, applicants can collect their passports from its offices located at 20 Ernest Oppenheimer Avenue, Bruma, Johannesburg.
Authorities have urged applicants to prepare all required documents before visiting the Consulate to avoid long queues, delays and failed collections.
Applicants collecting their passports must bring:
- Their receipt
- Paycode
- A valid Zimbabwe national ID or passport
The Consulate stressed that incomplete documentation may delay the release of passports, especially during busy collection periods.
Parents and guardians collecting passports for children have also been advised to carry additional supporting documents.
In such cases, the child’s birth certificate must be presented together with the parent or guardian’s identification documents and the original collection requirements.
The Consulate further warned applicants who already hold valid Zimbabwean passports that the old passports must first be cancelled before new ones can be issued.
Officials said the cancellation process attracts a fee of R200.
The notice also carries an important warning for individuals collecting passports on behalf of relatives, friends or other applicants.
Those collecting for someone else must present either:
- An affidavit issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS), or
- An official collection letter from the Zimbabwe Consulate
- They must also provide their own identification documents together with all supporting paperwork linked to the passport applicant.
The latest development comes as Zimbabwean diplomatic missions across South Africa continue battling heavy demand for passports and consular services from a growing diaspora community.
For many Zimbabweans living abroad, passport delays can disrupt employment contracts, permit renewals, banking processes and international travel plans, making consular updates highly significant within migrant communities.
In recent years, long queues and processing backlogs at foreign missions have frequently triggered frustration among applicants, particularly in South Africa, which hosts one of the largest Zimbabwean diaspora populations in the world.
Zimbabwean passports processed in South Africa are now issued under the emergency passport system, with applicants required to pay US$270 or the Rand equivalent for an emergency e-passport application.
Commonly required documents for passport applications include:
- Original long birth certificate
- Zimbabwe national ID card
- Old passport where applicable
- Proof of residence
- Passport application form
- Passport-sized photographs where required
- Marriage certificate for married applicants seeking surname changes
- Proof of payment or payment receipt
For children, additional supporting documents may include birth certificates, parents’ identification documents and consent paperwork where necessary.
The Consulate’s latest announcement is expected to ease pressure for hundreds of applicants whose passports are now ready for collection.
Applicants have been strongly encouraged to verify their paperwork carefully before travelling to the Consulate, as missing documents could result in being turned away and forced to rejoin queues on another day.
