Harare – The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has officially introduced the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, a new national knockout tournament bankrolled by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, with US$5 million set aside annually for the competition.
In unveiling the tournament, ZIFA described it in bold terms:
“THE BIGGEST, THE RICHEST CUP IN ZIMBABWE FOOTBALL HISTORY. 💰🏆🔥”
The association added:
“The ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup has arrived – raising the stakes, lifting the standard, and creating real reward for ambition.”
The launch signals one of the most ambitious financial commitments ever made to domestic football in Zimbabwe. The tournament is expected to run as a flagship national knockout competition, cutting across multiple tiers of the game.
ZIFA made it clear that this is not just another cup competition:
“This is more than a tournament. It’s a statement: Zimbabwean football is ready to grow, compete and shine.”
A National Knockout With Broad Reach
Unlike the traditional league structure of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup is designed as a nationwide knockout tournament.
ZIFA confirmed the historic nature of the moment:

The competition is being bankrolled by President Mnangagwa, who is set to officially launch the tournament. ZIFA stated:
“Zimbabwean football is entering a bold new era as His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, is set to officially launch the ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, our flagship national knockout tournament.”
The direct financial backing places this competition among the most well-funded domestic tournaments in the country’s history. While detailed prize breakdowns have not yet been publicly released, the US$5 million annual commitment significantly raises the financial stakes for participating clubs.
What Is Known – And What Is Still Pending
At this stage, ZIFA has not yet released full competition regulations, entry criteria, prize distribution models, match scheduling framework, or qualification implications for continental football.
However, the timing of the announcement is significant. The development comes as the 2026 season of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League is set to kick off on Saturday, 06 March, meaning Zimbabwean football is entering the new campaign with renewed financial momentum and heightened expectations.
