Fighting away from Las Vegas for the first time in his UFC career, Gorimbo entered the octagon with urgency and purpose. He opened with body kicks and looked to impose himself in the clinch, hunting for early takedowns. However, Micallef’s composure and forward pressure saw the Australian edge a tight opening round, landing the cleaner shots and dictating the pace.
Round two was a different story. Gorimbo settled, found his rhythm, and exploded into life with sharp combinations before securing a crucial takedown. For several minutes, he controlled the fight on the ground, showcasing balance, strength, and growing confidence. Even as Micallef scrambled and threatened briefly from his back, Gorimbo remained composed, doing enough to level the contest heading into the final round.
With everything on the line, the third round delivered drama. The fight hung in the balance before Micallef surged late, unleashing a flurry of punches that forced Gorimbo onto the fence. Under intense pressure, the Zimbabwean showed remarkable toughness, absorbing heavy shots while still looking for openings. A spinning back fist in the dying moments sealed a strong finish for the Australian.
The judges scored it 28-29, 29-28, 29-28 in favour of Micallef, a decision that sparked debate given Gorimbo’s dominant second round.
For Gorimbo, it’s a bitter pill to swallow. But in defeat, he showed heart, evolution, and undeniable grit, proof that his breakthrough moment in the UFC may not be far away.
