Manchester United delivered one of their most convincing derby performances in recent years, beating Manchester City 2–0 at Old Trafford and leaving Pep Guardiola facing uncomfortable questions about tactics, selection, and risk-taking.
For long spells, this game felt like a chess match. City dominated territory, controlled possession, and won set pieces, but they lacked cutting edge. United, meanwhile, stayed patient, absorbed pressure, and waited for moments to strike. When those moments came, they took them ruthlessly.
The turning point arrived on 65 minutes. Bryan Mbeumo, sharp and decisive all afternoon, finished clinically after a perfectly weighted assist from Bruno Fernandes. It was United’s reward for discipline and belief, and a warning City failed to heed.
Guardiola’s decisions quickly came under scrutiny. With City missing key defenders like Rúben Dias, John Stones and Gvardiol, the gamble to deploy Rico Lewis at right-back looked increasingly costly. Lewis was booked, exposed defensively, and struggled to contain United’s wide threat. The later decision to substitute Erling Haaland, City’s 20-goal striker, while chasing the game only fueled fan frustration.
United smelled blood. In the 76th minute, Patrick Dorgu sealed the contest with a superb finish, again highlighting City’s defensive disorganisation. Bruno Fernandes, who assisted both goals, was the game’s conductor, dictating tempo and unlocking City with intelligence rather than flair.
City’s injury list was long Dias, Stones, Gvardiol, Kovacic, Savinho, Oscar Bobb and others were sidelined, but this result cannot be blamed on absentees alone. Guardiola’s experimental approach backfired against a United side that executed a clear, disciplined plan.
In the end, this was less about City losing and more about United winning. Mbeumo’s energy, Fernandes’ vision, and Carrick’s in-game management outmatched Guardiola’s high-risk choices.
The Manchester derby belongs to United, and the questions now sit firmly on the blue side of the city.
