Former Manchester City striker and ex-Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari steps into one of the biggest tests of his young coaching spell this afternoon as Highlanders FC face reigning Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions Scottland FC in a match loaded with pressure, politics and expectation.

For Highlanders, this is more than just another fixture. It is a moment of truth.
Bosso’s opening five matches have all ended in draws, leaving the Bulawayo giants still searching for their first win of the season. On paper, the record reads unbeaten. In reality, it has only deepened anxiety within the camp. Highlanders have scored just three goals and conceded three, numbers that reflect a side struggling to convert effort into victories.
That slow start has only intensified the spotlight on Mwaruwari.
The former Warriors skipper arrived at the club in January 2026 under controversial circumstances after South African coach Thabo Senong was forced out just weeks into a two-year contract. Senong, who had been unveiled in early December 2025 and spent nearly a month preparing the team, later revealed he was instructed to return to South Africa within two hours following what he described as a sudden reversal by the club’s financial backers.
Sources close to the situation say the decision followed pressure from club benefactors and ownership structures, with businessman Wicknell Chivayo reportedly insisting on the appointment of a local coach. Funding concerns are also believed to have played a central role.
Mwaruwari himself has since spoken openly about internal resistance, suggesting there may be deliberate efforts to destabilise his tenure. Claims of sabotage have further raised the stakes around today’s match.
On the other side stands a confident Scottland side, the defending champions and one of the league’s most organised outfits. For Highlanders, redemption is now urgently needed. Another draw may do little to calm tensions, while defeat could further fuel speculation over the coach’s future.
This is why today’s showdown feels bigger than three points.
For Benjani, a man once trusted to lead the national team on the pitch, this is now about proving he can do the same from the technical bench.
