As schools across Zimbabwe are reopening for the 2026 first term, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has advised parents, guardians, school authorities, and transport operators to prioritise learner safety. The message is clear: learner safety comes first.

In a statement released on 12 January 2026, Police Spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi emphasized that transport operators must ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, avoid speeding, and never overload buses or learner transport vehicles.

“Drivers are reminded to exercise caution, avoid speeding and strictly comply with all road rules and regulations in order to prevent road traffic accidents,” Nyathi said.

Parents and school authorities are also urged to avoid nighttime travel for learners to reduce exposure to accidents and crime. Nyathi added,

“Learners should not attempt to cross flooded rivers, streams or bridges, either on foot or in vehicles. School authorities and motorists are encouraged to closely monitor weather conditions and road accessibility for the safety of school children.”

On the financial side, the ZRP highlighted the risk of keeping cash on school premises. Nyathi advised,

“School authorities and parents are advised to deposit school fees and other tuition-related fees through financial institutions. This precautionary measure will help minimize the risk of robbery and theft, as keeping large sums of cash at school premises attracts criminal elements leading to armed robbery incidents.”

The police also encouraged vigilance. Nyathi reminded the public to report any suspicious or criminal activities without delay, using the National Complaints Desk number (0242) 103631, WhatsApp on 0712 800 197, or by contacting the nearest police station.

With learners back on the roads and in classrooms, the ZRP message is straightforward but vital: responsible driving, careful planning, and community vigilance are key to keeping children safe this term.
