ZIMRA intercepts a contraband of 15 tonnes of smuggled meat from South Africa

Chiredzi, Zimbabwe – In a major enforcement operation, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has intercepted a staggering 15 tonnes of smuggled meat most likely from South Africa at the Mutirikwi River area in Triangle, a known smuggling corridor.

ZIMRA said the truck, registered AGZ 3488, was found carrying 197 packages of 80kg chicken cuts, 7 packages of 10kg sausages, and assorted polony, all without proper customs documentation. Initial investigations indicate the meat which is valued at approximately ZWG 945,000, originated from South Africa and was transported without refrigeration, creating serious food safety risks. ZIMRA Commissioner for Customs and Excise Mr. Batsirai Chadzingwa said:

“This interception is about protecting our community.  Transporters and importers must follow designated routes and laid-down procedures. Smuggling won’t be tolerated, and the law will be enforced.”

ZIMRA & ZRP Work Together To Intercept Smuggled Meat…

The Chiredzi ZIMRA operation comes just weeks after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) destroyed three tonnes of smuggled meat in Harare, also most likely from South Africa, following the arrest of three suspects, Lee Chakatama (21), Tafadzwa Makanganya (40), and Canaan Marimo (42), for evading customs and excise formalities. The Harare seizure involved chicken transported without veterinary inspection or food safety checks, mirroring the public health threat of the Triangle consignment. Authorities also discovered dagga alongside the chicken cuts, underscoring the link between smuggling and drug trafficking.

Food safety experts warn that such smuggling is more than just an economic crime. Said one specialist:

“This is a public health threat. One contaminated batch can trigger outbreaks, particularly in densely populated areas with limited access to clinics.”

The economic impact is equally severe. Zimbabwe’s legal poultry industry supports thousands of farmers who comply with food safety standards. Smuggled meat sold cheaply undercuts these farmers, threatens livelihoods, and reduces government revenue through evaded duties. Meanwhile, authorities still bear the costs of enforcement and potential health crises caused by unsafe imports.

ZIMRA and ZRP emphasize that importing or selling uninspected foodstuffs is criminal. Destroying unsafe consignments, though costly, is essential to prevent public harm. Experts, however, caution that enforcement alone cannot stop smuggling, which thrives due to poverty, high import duties, and profit incentives.

For ordinary Zimbabweans, the threat is often invisible but real. A bargain at a roadside stall could carry serious health hazards. For honest poultry farmers, each intercepted consignment is another unfair blow. While recent seizures are victories for law enforcement, they also signal that vigilance, awareness, and strict regulation remain vital in the ongoing fight against meat smuggling.
