Daniel Munyanyi in Manchester United Jersey was arrested on the 2nd of March 2026 in connection with the murder of two police officers in Zaka Masvingo.

Masvingo – A 50-year-old man linked to a string of violent robberies across Masvingo Province has been sentenced to an effective 62 years in prison after being convicted on multiple counts of armed robbery.

Daniel Munyanyi of Ndume Village in Ndanga appeared before the Masvingo Regional Court where regional magistrate Mr Innocent Bepura handed down a 72-year prison sentence. However, the court suspended 10 years on condition of good behaviour, leaving Munyanyi with an effective jail term of 62 years behind bars.

If he serves the full sentence, Munyanyi will only complete his term in the year 2088, when he will be 112 years old.

The sentencing follows his conviction on six counts of armed robbery committed across Masvingo Province between June 2025 and January 2026.

More Charges Still Pending

Despite the lengthy sentence, Munyanyi’s legal troubles are far from over. The court remanded him in custody to 20 March, when he is expected to return to court to face two counts of murder.

The murder charges relate to the fatal shooting of two detectives from the Harare CID Homicide Unit, who were reportedly tracking him as part of investigations into the robbery spree.

Prosecutor Mr Liberty Hove represented the State.

Investigators say the detectives were shot and killed while closing in on Munyanyi at his rural home in Chimedza, Zaka during a police operation.

Manhunt Ends in Community Arrest

The double killing triggered a massive police manhunt across Masvingo Province.

Munyanyi was eventually tracked down and arrested by members of the public in Nyika, Bikita, bringing an end to an intense search that had alarmed communities across the region.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police later confirmed that the firearm suspected to have been used in the killings was recovered during the operation.

Trail of Armed Robberies

Court proceedings revealed a brazen robbery trail stretching across several districts.

On 20 June 2025, Munyanyi reportedly attacked Chief Nhema’s homestead where he tied up the traditional leader with shoelaces before fleeing with US$10 000, five wristwatches, jewellery and shoes.

Months later, on 8 December 2025, he allegedly raided Tawanda Mandava’s shop at Chinyudze Business Centre in Zaka and stole US$4 500, US$400 worth of airtime, groceries, a 9mm Star pistol and a Toyota Porte vehicle.

The crime spree continued on 20 December when he reportedly stormed Brighton Mwabvu’s house at Jerera Growth Point and got away with US$781 and a Toyota Mark X.

The following day, armed with a pistol, Munyanyi allegedly struck again at Mandadzaka Business Centre in Bikita, robbing Austin Fungai of US$300 and groceries.

On 6 January this year, he reportedly attacked Emmanuel Mbanda in Mpandawana, Gutu, stealing a Mazda vehicle and an iPhone at gunpoint.

The final robbery in the charge sheet occurred on 29 January when he allegedly robbed Caroline Gwanyanya of US$300 and a Honda Fit vehicle at gunpoint in Musiso Village.

Focus Now Shifts to Murder Trial

While the armed robbery case has now been concluded, the country’s attention is shifting to the upcoming murder trial linked to the deaths of two police officers.

The outcome of that case could further determine the long-term legal fate of a man already facing what is effectively a life sentence behind bars.
