Liverpool teenager Trey Nyoni has taken another significant step in his emerging career, scoring his first senior goal for the club in the UEFA Champions League against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul.

The 19-year-old midfielder found the net in the 25th minute on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, giving Liverpool an early lead in a match that ultimately ended in a dramatic 3-2 defeat.

But beyond the milestone at club level, Nyoni’s achievement has particular significance for Zimbabwe, where his family roots have attracted interest over the possibility of him representing the Warriors.

Nyoni’s Zimbabwean Roots Remain Central To His International Future

Nyoni was born in England on 30 June 2007 to Zimbabwean parents, but his family connections to Zimbabwe run deep.

His paternal roots are traced to Gwanda in Matabeleland South. His father, according to previous Zimbabwean media reports, was born and raised in Zimbabwe before relocating to the United Kingdom.

The Liverpool midfielder’s Zimbabwean heritage has become an important talking point as the Warriors look to attract talented players of Zimbabwean descent playing abroad.

Despite representing England at youth level, Nyoni remains eligible to switch his international allegiance to Zimbabwe, subject to FIFA’s eligibility rules.

The possibility of seeing him in a Warriors shirt has generated considerable excitement among Zimbabwean football supporters, particularly given his rapid development at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

However, his international future remains a personal decision, and there has been no confirmed commitment to Zimbabwe.

Family Dismisses Claims That Nyoni Rejected Zimbabwe

The debate over Nyoni’s identity intensified in recent years after reports circulated claiming that the youngster had rejected his Zimbabwean heritage.

His Family Strongly Disputed Those Claims.

Former Warriors and CAPS United midfielder Alois Bunjira revealed that he had met Nyoni’s maternal grandmother at St Clare Roman Catholic Church in Harare, where they discussed the player’s background and international future.

According to Bunjira, the family was deeply upset by reports attributing anti-Zimbabwean sentiments to the Liverpool youngster.

“The grandmother stressed that Trey never said those things and he was very much hurt reading that and some insults hurled towards him,” Bunjira said.

He also relayed the family’s position on Nyoni’s ancestry, emphasising that both sides of his family have Zimbabwean roots.

“Both sets of maternal and paternal grandparents are full Zimbabweans. Both parents are full Zimbabweans, with one coming from Mbare and the other from Bulawayo,” Bunjira said.

The family also maintained that Nyoni was proud of his Zimbabwean heritage despite being born and holding citizenship in Britain. ZiGoats +1

A special milestone despite Liverpool’s defeat

Nyoni’s goal came after Liverpool had started brightly in Istanbul, with the teenager rewarding their early pressure with a moment of quality.

Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a deep ball towards captain Virgil van Dijk, but Fenerbahçe’s defence failed to clear the danger effectively. Nyoni reacted quickly, meeting the loose ball with a first-time strike that took a slight deflection before beating goalkeeper Ederson.

It was a landmark moment for the youngster, who has progressed through Liverpool’s academy since joining from Leicester City in September 2023.

Nyoni made his senior Liverpool debut aged 16 and subsequently became the club’s youngest player to feature in European competition when he appeared against PSV Eindhoven in January 2025. Liverpool FC +1

His breakthrough goal, however, could not inspire Liverpool to victory.

Mason Greenwood equalised for Fenerbahçe in the 29th minute with a deflected free-kick, cancelling out Nyoni’s opener.

Liverpool regained the advantage in the 69th minute when substitute Alexander Isak headed home a Cody Gakpo cross.

But the hosts responded again, with Archie Brown restoring parity four minutes later before Vedat Muriqi completed the turnaround in the 79th minute.

The 3-2 defeat ended Liverpool’s unbeaten start to their Champions League campaign.

On scoring his first senior goal for the club, Nyoni said:

“I’m proud, as always. I know my family back home are proud. It has been a long time coming but obviously happy to score and get my first goal for Liverpool. It’s a day that I’ll never forget. Even though we lost, it’s a day I’ll never forget.”

Zimbabwe Will Be Watching

For Zimbabwe, Nyoni’s progress represents an exciting possibility.

The country has increasingly looked towards players born and developed abroad to strengthen the Warriors, with several England-born footballers having committed to Zimbabwe at senior international level.

Nyoni, however, is at a different stage of his career. His growing involvement at Liverpool and experience in European football could make him an important addition to Zimbabwe’s national team if he eventually chooses to represent the country.

Bunjira has previously urged Zimbabweans to respect the midfielder’s decision rather than subject him and his family to unnecessary pressure.

“At the end of the day, it is his choice. If he does choose to represent England, we as Zimbabweans should respect that choice and continue supporting mwana wevhu as a footballer. If he chooses Zimbabwe, we shall rejoice,” Bunjira said.

For now, Nyoni’s immediate focus remains on establishing himself at Liverpool.

But his first competitive senior goal for the Reds, scored on one of European football’s biggest stages, is another reminder of the talent Zimbabwe could potentially welcome into the Warriors fold.

Whether he eventually wears Zimbabwe’s colours remains to be seen. What is beyond doubt is that his career is gathering momentum.
