TelOne Football Club have pulled the trigger on head coach Herbert Maruwa after a nightmare start to the season, as pressure mounts in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League.

The club confirmed the split on Thursday, 30 April 2026 framing it as a “mutual agreement,” but the numbers tell a harsher story. TelOne sit 16th on the log with just three points from nine matches, relegation form that left the technical bench with little room to survive.

In their statement, the club thanked Maruwa for his “unwavering commitment,” crediting him for player development and professionalism. But in modern football, results are currency, and TelOne have been running on empty.

The crisis has been building. A bruising transfer window saw the departure of key figures, including Washington Navaya, last season’s top scorer and Player of the Year after netting 17 goals. His exit has left a blunt attack and exposed the squad’s lack of depth.

Assistant coach Charles Mutero now steps in as interim boss, tasked with steadying a side already flirting with danger. The club says a permanent appointment will be announced soon, but time is not on their side.

Meanwhile, the turmoil extends beyond TelOne. Former Kaizer Chiefs and Warriors captain Willard Katsande has walked away from his role at Chinhoyi-based Rangers, citing poor working conditions following the resignation of the club president.

The twin developments underline a deeper instability within local football structures, from the dugout to the boardroom.

For TelOne, the equation is simple: get the next appointment right or risk a full-blown relegation battle. For Zimbabwean football, the questions are bigger, and far from answered.
