Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has urged citizens to become active partners in road maintenance by reporting potholes and other urgent road defects. In a statement seen by ZiGoats, the Ministry emphasised that prompt public reporting will enable faster intervention, efficient resource allocation, and help prevent minor defects from turning into serious hazards.

“We need your help to keep our roads safe! Partner with the Ministry to report potholes and road defects in your area. Send clear photos or videos and the exact location to our Provincial Roads Engineers,” the Ministry said.

The announcement, dated 19 January 2026, included direct hotlines to engineers in all ten provinces, covering metropolitan, regional, and rural networks.

The Ministry highlighted that road rehabilitation and maintenance are central to national infrastructure goals and economic development, aligning with Vision 2030, continental, and regional agendas. Major roads like the Masvingo–Harare highway have been rehabilitated, while work continues on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls highway, often described by commuters as a “death trap.”

Despite these successes, gaps remain. Many roads, including high-traffic and strategic routes, still require urgent rehabilitation or complete overhaul, with stalled projects frustrating motorists and public transport users who pay significant tolls and taxes. Initiatives such as the Old Mazowe Road upgrade, leading to the new Parliament in Mt Hampden, showcase what effective intervention can achieve.

The Ministry’s call is timely. By reporting potholes and defects directly to provincial engineers, citizens can help accelerate repairs, improve road safety, and support the Mnangagwa administration’s vision of inclusive development that leaves no one and no place behind.

  1. […] Roads in Epworth are theoretical. Many are deeply eroded by running water. Others have disappeared because residents built houses in the middle of them. In some places, giant boulders block what should be access routes. You reach a dead end and turn back. […]
