Scottland FC owner and president Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya is reportedly considering walking away from football next year, citing what he believes is unfair treatment of his club by match officials, football administrators and people around the game.
The Mabvuku legislator’s reported frustration comes at a difficult time for Scottland, whose hopes of retaining the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title have suffered a major setback, while their maiden CAF Champions League campaign ended in disappointment.
Stanley Gama, head of communications at Harare City Council, revealed on social media that he had spoken to Sakupwanya and that the businessman was increasingly unhappy with his experience in football.
Gama said Sakupwanya remained passionate about the game but felt his financial investment had not been matched by fair treatment.
“The man is passionate about football, his coming into football reignited the interest. He made huge investments in football. Football is back. But he is bitter and may walk away from football next year,” Gama wrote.
He added that Sakupwanya believed Scottland had been unfairly targeted by match officials, administrators and even people who claimed to be helping the club.
“He says he may decide to concentrate on business. He says his love for football has been eroded,” Gama said.
According to Gama, Sakupwanya was particularly angered by the officiating during Scottland’s goalless draw against Chicken Inn at Rufaro Stadium on Wednesday, November 4.
“He was in the stands yesterday when Scottland were robbed of a clear goal,” Gama wrote.
Gama also quoted the club owner as saying: “I’m fed up, let’s lose fairly.”
The claims reflect Sakupwanya’s reported frustration, although there is no independent finding establishing that Scottland have been deliberately targeted by match officials.
A Costly Football Experiment Under Pressure
Sakupwanya’s reported threat to leave would mark a significant development for a club that has quickly become one of the biggest financial forces in Zimbabwean football.
Since entering the domestic game, Scottland have attracted attention through substantial spending on players, technical personnel and club operations.
Their financial muscle helped them assemble a competitive squad featuring established names, including former Warriors stars Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat.
The investment delivered immediate success. Scottland won the 2025 Premier Soccer League championship in their maiden top-flight season, establishing themselves as one of the most remarkable newcomers in recent Zimbabwean football history.
The club has also attracted attention for its financial support of other teams and contributions to the wider football community.
However, its rapid rise has come with controversy.
Questions have repeatedly been raised about the circumstances surrounding the club’s promotion from Division One, with critics questioning whether the process was handled fairly. Allegations of match-fixing and preferential treatment have also circulated around the club’s rise and subsequent title challenge.
These claims have generated debate among supporters, but allegations should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence.
Scottland have also faced scrutiny over disciplinary matters, player eligibility and decisions by football authorities. Some critics argue that the club has benefited from favourable treatment, while others believe it has been unfairly singled out because of its financial and political profile.
The debate has become increasingly heated as the club fights to defend its championship.
Hardrock threatens Scottland’s title defence
Scottland’s frustrations have coincided with a difficult end to their 2026 league campaign.
The defending champions were held to a 0-0 draw by Chicken Inn in a rearranged Matchday 31 fixture at Rufaro Stadium, a result that left them four points behind leaders Hardrock with two matches remaining.
The draw was particularly damaging because Scottland needed maximum points to keep the pressure on the newcomers.
Despite creating several opportunities, including efforts that struck the woodwork, they failed to find a breakthrough.
Hardrock, meanwhile, have enjoyed an impressive run of nine consecutive league victories and are now within touching distance of a historic maiden Premier League championship.
According to the Premier Soccer League, Hardrock have 69 points against Scottland’s 65.
The newcomers need just one victory from their remaining fixtures against Simba Bhora and FC Platinum to secure the title.
Scottland must win their remaining matches and hope Hardrock drop points in both games.
The pressure is therefore mounting on a club that entered the season expecting to defend its championship.
African dream ends in disappointment
Scottland’s domestic struggles have been compounded by their early exit from the CAF Champions League.
The Zimbabwean champions appeared on course for a historic group-stage qualification after defeating Angolan giants Petro de Luanda 2-0 in the first leg of their second preliminary round tie in Harare.
However, Petro overturned the deficit with a 3-0 victory in Luanda on October 23, progressing 3-2 on aggregate.
The result ended Scottland’s continental ambitions and exposed the challenge of competing against established African clubs.
For a club that has invested heavily in assembling an ambitious squad, the elimination was another disappointing setback.
