Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa has sharply criticised the lavish wedding linked to businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei’s family, describing it as a symbol of state capture, inequality and elite excess at a time millions of Zimbabweans are battling economic hardship.

Chamisa’s remarks came after images, videos and reports from the high-profile wedding circulated widely across social media, sparking heated public debate over wealth, politics and privilege in Zimbabwe.

The wedding united Taonanyasha John Tagwirei and Poneso Tinomuda Janda and reportedly attracted some of the country’s most influential political, business and religious figures. Reports and online claims suggested that cash, land, luxury vehicles and gifts worth nearly US$20 million were showered on the newlyweds.

Among the prominent guests reportedly in attendance were President Emmerson Mnangagwa, outspoken politician Temba Mliswa, Youth Minister Tinomuda Machakaire, Finance Secretary George Guvamatanga, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, religious leaders Uebert Angel and Emmanuel Makandiwa, businessman Paul Tungwarara, government spokesperson Nick Mangwana, and Parliament Speaker Jacob Mudenda.

Members of former President Robert Mugabe’s family, including Bona Mugabe, Chatunga Mugabe and former First Lady Grace Mugabe, were also reportedly represented.

In a strongly-worded statement shared online, Chamisa said the event reflected a growing divide between the political elite and ordinary Zimbabweans struggling to survive under worsening economic conditions.

That wedding guest list is not merely a list of invitees; it is a roll call of the few who continue to plunder the nation’s wealth and resources for their own benefit,” Chamisa said.

The obscene display of looted wealth stinks to high heaven.

Chamisa said the luxury associated with the ceremony stood in painful contrast to the reality facing many Zimbabweans, including collapsing healthcare services, struggling schools, low salaries, shrinking pensions and deteriorating public infrastructure.

At a time when millions are suffering, such extravagance exposes the deep inequality and moral decay at the heart of our society,” he added.

The opposition leader also renewed his criticism of what he called “state capture,” accusing politically connected elites of benefiting from national resources while ordinary citizens continue facing economic difficulties.

This should serve as a wake-up call for all of us to say enough is enough,” Chamisa said.

“We must demand a new leadership with a citizens’ mandate that serves all rather than a privileged few.”

The wedding has since become one of the most discussed topics across Zimbabwean social media platforms, with reactions sharply divided.

Supporters of the event defended the celebrations, arguing that successful businesspeople have the right to spend their money as they choose and celebrate family milestones in grand fashion. Others described the wedding as a reflection of wealth accumulation and influence among politically connected individuals.

Critics, however, viewed the lavish gifts and guest list as evidence of widening inequality in Zimbabwe, where many citizens continue facing high unemployment, rising living costs and weakened public services.

Tagwirei remains one of Zimbabwe’s most influential and controversial businessmen due to his close links to government and involvement in major sectors of the economy, including fuel, mining and finance. His name frequently dominates national political and economic discussions.

While no official figure has independently confirmed the reported value of the gifts presented at the wedding, the scale of the ceremony and the presence of top political and religious figures ensured it quickly became a national talking point.

As debate continues, the wedding has evolved beyond a private family celebration into a wider national conversation about wealth, political influence, economic inequality and the future direction of Zimbabwe.
