SHEFFIELD, UK – A GoFundMe fundraiser is gathering pace to help save the life of a Zimbabwean nurse based in Sheffield, as friends race against time to keep his cancer treatment going.

Shine Siamkwari, originally from Zimbabwe and a long-time Sheffield resident since 2002, is fighting oesophageal cancer after exhausting all available treatment options in the UK.

Friends describe Shine as a valued member of the community who dedicated his life to caring for others. He worked for years in the healthcare sector before qualifying as a nurse after studying at Sheffield Hallam University.

In December 2024, Shine was hospitalised after suddenly losing the ability to swallow food or even fluids. What doctors initially believed to be an oesophageal stricture later turned into a devastating cancer diagnosis after months of painful procedures and uncertainty.

According to the organisers of the fundraiser, the situation took a heartbreaking turn when Shine was informed that the NHS could not offer any further treatment and that he had only a few months to live.

A COURAGEOUS DECISION

Refusing to accept that prognosis, Shine made the bold and courageous decision to seek urgent, life-saving treatment in India, where alternative medical options were available.

He is now undergoing an intensive and physically demanding treatment programme that includes chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, a combination that has offered renewed hope but comes with overwhelming financial pressure.

FUNDS RUNNING OUT

Shine has already begun treatment, but friends say the costs of medical care, hospital stays and basic living expenses are draining resources fast.

A GoFundMe appeal has been launched with a target of £20,000. As of now, £18,224 has been raised, about 92% of the £20,000 interim target, showing strong public support, but more help is urgently needed to complete the full course of treatment.

The organisers say they have come together as friends “to raise funds to help save his life,” stressing that time is critical.

A SIMPLE APPEAL

The message from the fundraising team is clear and heartfelt:

“Every donation, no matter how small, will help give Shine a fighting chance. If you’re unable to donate, please consider sharing this page. Thank you for standing with Shine during this incredibly difficult time.”

For many, Shine’s story is a painful reminder of the human cost behind cancer statistics, and the quiet heroes in healthcare who end up needing help themselves.

As the appeal continues, friends say the goal is simple: keep Shine’s treatment going, keep hope alive, and give a nurse who spent his life caring for others the chance to keep fighting.
