HARARE – The departure of Marian Mario Marinica has left Zimbabwean football reflecting on a tenure that was as productive as it was polarising.

In a short spell with the Warriors, the Romanian coach reshaped the team’s identity, turning a blunt attack into a goal-scoring outfit, but not without friction inside the camp.

An Attacking Identity Reborn

For years, goals had been a problem for Zimbabwe. Under previous regimes, including that of Michael Nees, the Warriors often struggled to convert possession into results.

Marinica changed that narrative.

Under his guidance, Zimbabwe scored in every match, a statistic that quickly won over fans hungry for a more expressive, forward-thinking team. His philosophy was clear: attack, press, and take risks.

The progress was also reflected in results at the Four Nations Tournament in Botswana, where Zimbabwe lifted the trophy after a strong run of performances.

For Zimbabwe, that victory meant far more than silverware. It marked a major statistical milestone for Marinica, who succeeded Michael Nees in November 2025 and quickly transformed the Warriors into a side with renewed attacking identity and belief.

Perhaps most impressively, Zimbabwe scored in every single match under the Romanian tactician.

The run began with a difficult but familiar 3-1 defeat to Algeria’s Desert Lions, followed by a spirited 2-1 victory over Qatar in friendlies. That was then followed by a narrow 2-1 loss to Egypt, a 1-1 draw against Angola, and a 3-2 defeat to South Africa at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco. The turning point came with a commanding 3-0 win over Botswana during the Four Nations Tournament, before the campaign was crowned with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Zambia.

For a side previously blunt in attack, the numbers pointed to a clear shift, not just in results, but in confidence, intent, and playing identity.

Discipline Or Division?

But while the team improved on the pitch, tensions simmered off it.

Marinica’s hardline approach, particularly towards senior players like Marshall Munetsi, Walter Musona, Khama Billiat and Jordan Zemura, drew heavy criticism. His strict demands and uncompromising stance on attitude created a divide, with some praising his discipline, while others questioned his man-management.

The biggest flashpoint came during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

His decision to bench Tawanda Maswanhise and Brendan Galloway, citing a lack of “fire in the belly”, raised eyebrows.

When they were finally given a chance, both players responded emphatically.

Maswanhise went on to win the CAF Most Promising Player award, while Galloway delivered standout performances, leaving critics to question whether the coach had misjudged key talent at a crucial moment.

Results Vs Relationships

Marinica’s tenure ultimately became a balancing act between progress and controversy.

On one hand, he brought urgency, goals, and a winning edge. On the other, his approach tested relationships within the squad, a factor many believe may have contributed to his early exit.

Still, there is little doubt he shifted the conversation around the Warriors.

For the first time in a while, Zimbabwe looked like a team capable of scoring freely and competing with intent.

What Next For Tembo?

Attention now turns to Kaitano Tembo, the man tasked with taking the Warriors forward.

Tembo inherits a team with attacking confidence and proven potential, but also one that needs unity, balance, and consistency.

The big question is simple:

Can he keep the goals flowing while restoring harmony in the dressing room?

Because Marinica may be gone, but the foundation he leaves behind, both good and bad, will shape what comes next for Zimbabwe’s national team.
