HARARE – United Kingdom-based Zimbabwean football administrator Marshall Gore has identified encouraging signs in the Warriors squad assembled by head coach Marian Mario Marinica for the upcoming Four Nations Tournament in Botswana, despite criticism from sections of the football community.
The squad announcement has sparked debate among fans and analysts, mainly due to the omission of Warriors vice-captain Marshall Munetsi. The midfielder, currently enjoying strong form at club level, was widely expected to feature in the tournament squad.
The absence of Munetsi has drawn sharp reactions. His relative, lawyer and Great Hope Foundation founder Moreboys Munetsi, even suggested the former Orlando Pirates midfielder should consider stepping away from international football to focus fully on his club career.
However, Gore, a long-time admirer of Munetsi, believes the squad still presents several positives, particularly the growing inclusion of Zimbabwean players based in the diaspora. The squad also differs significantly from the team that represented Zimbabwe at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco.
Speaking on the selections, Gore highlighted several new faces who could strengthen the Warriors in the long term.
Diaspora Talent Stepping Forward
Gore praised coach Marinica for giving opportunities to emerging Zimbabwean players playing abroad.
Panashe Makwiramiti (Central Midfielder – Haverfordwest County FC)
- A hardworking and energetic midfielder capable of linking defence and attack.
- Known for his high work rate, strong ball retention, and tactical discipline.
- Experience gained in Wales, Gibraltar, and Sweden shows his adaptability.
- Still developing, but he could grow into a dependable box-to-box option for the Warriors.
Corbin Mthunzi (Centre Back – Ipswich Town U21)
- A highly promising 18-year-old defender currently playing in Premier League 2.
- Strong, composed, and mature for his age.
- Previously represented England at youth level, highlighting the quality of his development.
- Seen as a long-term defensive prospect for Zimbabwe.
Returning Faces Add Balance
Gore also welcomed the return of players who have been performing well at their respective clubs.
- Shane Maroodza (Left Back – FK Sarajevo)
- Marley Tavaziva (Goalkeeper – Brentford FC)
With established left-backs Divine Lunga and Jordan Zemura unavailable, Maroodza could step into the role. Naturally left-footed and experienced in European football, the defender now has a major opportunity to stake his claim in the national team.
Tavaziva, meanwhile, continues to progress within Brentford’s Premier League system, and his inclusion reflects confidence in young goalkeeping talent emerging from the diaspora.
More Diaspora Prospects Emerging
The Warriors technical team has also been monitoring other Zimbabwe-eligible players abroad. Among them is Isaac Mabaya, the Liverpool defender who operates primarily as a right wing-back.
Fans had also hoped to see highly rated Liverpool youngster Trey Nyoni included in the squad, but the teenager reportedly did not meet coach Marinica during the coach’s recent European scouting tour.
Other promising prospects include Ethan Sutherland and Leon Chiwome, both currently part of the development system at Wolverhampton Wanderers in England.
A Changing Warriors Squad
Gore believes the current squad reflects a broader shift in Zimbabwean football, where the national team increasingly taps into the diaspora talent pool. Gore said:
“The future of the Warriors is bright as more Zimbabwean players abroad step forward to represent the nation.”
He also clarified that the selections were made independently by the coach.
“Please note that these players were selected purely on merit by Coach Mario. I did not recommend or influence their selection in any way.”
As the Warriors prepare for the Four Nations Tournament in Botswana, the squad’s new mix of youth, diaspora talent, and returning players will be closely watched by supporters eager to see the next phase of Zimbabwe’s national team development.
