The Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe (MSD) has issued an update on Cyclone Gezani, assuring the nation that the system is not expected to cross into Zimbabwean territory, but warning that its effects will still be felt across the country.

Cyclone Gezani made landfall in Madagascar earlier this week before weakening into a Severe Tropical Storm. However, weather experts say the system is expected to re-intensify as it moves west-southwest away from Madagascar and briefly approaches the Mozambican coastline.

In a statement seen by ZiGoats.com, the MSD urged members of the public to remain vigilant and cautious even though Cyclone Gezani is not expected to enter into Zimbabwe.

According to the department, as of the morning of 12 February 2026, the storm was active in the Southwest Indian Ocean. While it has weakened for now, forecasters say it may regain strength before turning southwards into the southern Indian Ocean, where it is likely to dissipate.

Although cyclone Gezani will not make a direct hit, Zimbabwe will still feel its influence.

Currently, the system is drawing moisture away from the country, resulting in dry conditions, particularly in western areas. But this pattern is expected to change. As the storm shifts further south in the Mozambican Channel, a moisture band could develop and bring rainfall to Zimbabwe between 15 and 17 February 2026.

The MSD has advised the public, farmers and institutions to prepare for possible weather disruptions. Citizens are urged not to attempt crossing flooded rivers or streams, to secure loose outdoor structures, and to drive carefully in areas prone to poor drainage.

Farmers have been encouraged to protect livestock and equipment, while schools, event organisers and transport operators are advised to plan for potential interruptions.

The department says it will continue monitoring the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary.

For now, while Cyclone Gezani may not physically enter Zimbabwe, its presence in the region remains significant, a reminder that in weather matters, distance does not always mean safety.
