The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has urged families and the public to remain patient as the country prepares to implement the 2026 Presidential Amnesty that is expected to see thousands of inmates walk free.
Cabinet recently confirmed that President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has exercised his constitutional prerogative of mercy, paving the way for eligible inmates to benefit from the amnesty. Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi indicated that thousands stand to be released once the process is finalised.
More Details On Who Will Be Released
In a press statement dated 12 February 2026, ZPCS said while the announcement has generated excitement and anxiety among families, strict legal procedures must be followed before any inmate is discharged. Read in part the statement seen by ZiGoats.com:
“While we fully understand the anticipation and interest surrounding this development, it is important to emphasize that due processes must be meticulously followed before any inmate is released.”
According to ZPCS, the Amnesty will only be implemented once it has been formally gazetted and after thorough verification, screening and documentation processes are completed. Authorities say this is necessary to ensure that only inmates who fall within the specified categories benefit.
The Service described the President’s move as a “noble and humane gesture” reflecting government’s commitment to justice tempered with mercy, rehabilitation and reintegration.
But behind the official language lies the human reality. Across Zimbabwe, prison offices have reportedly been flooded with calls and visits from anxious relatives hoping their loved ones are on the release list. For many families, the amnesty represents reunion, relief and a second chance at rebuilding broken homes.
ZPCS said the process must be handled carefully to protect the integrity of the justice system and maintain public confidence. The statement read:
“This process is essential to uphold the rule of law, maintain public confidence, and safeguard the integrity of the justice delivery system.”
The Service also sent a direct message to those who will benefit. ZPCS said:
“The Amnesty is not merely a release from custody; it is an invitation to rebuild your lives, restore family bonds and contribute positively to national development.”
Communities have been urged to accept former inmates back into society and support their reintegration. Authorities say rehabilitation does not end at the prison gate, it depends on how society receives those given a second chance.
Presidential amnesties are not new in Zimbabwe, often granted during significant national events or milestones. However, each cycle brings renewed debate about rehabilitation, overcrowding in prisons and the balance between mercy and public safety.
