HARARE – The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) has provided an update on the long-awaited rehabilitation of the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls road, a project crucial for tourism, trade, and regional connectivity.

In a brief statement, Zinara said construction on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project (Cross Dete) is “progressing well” and in line with the project schedule. The agency highlighted that the works aim to improve road safety, enhance driving comfort, and strengthen connectivity along this strategic transport corridor. Read the statement in part:

“Works are progressing well on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project, with construction activities advancing steadily in line with the project schedule. The ongoing works are aimed at improving road safety, enhancing driving comfort, and strengthening connectivity along this critical transport corridor.”

The road, a key artery linking Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, has long been in need of urgent upgrades. Motorists report that travel which once took roughly four hours now stretches to about ten, highlighting the pressing need for accelerated construction.

Zinara reminded road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic management measures currently in place to ensure safety for both motorists and construction personnel.

Once complete, the upgraded road is expected to boost tourism, trade, and economic development across the region, linking cities, businesses, and communities more efficiently.

Despite Zinara’s assurances, the agency did not quantify the progress, leaving the public uncertain about how many kilometres have been completed or how much remains. Motorists and transport operators are eager for clear milestones to better plan their journeys.

The rehabilitation project has been outstanding for far too long, but if completed as planned, it promises a safer, smoother, and more reliable journey between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.
