Zimbabwe's Deputy Minister of Tourism And Hospitality Industry Tongai Mafidi Mnangagwa launches Hunyani United football club

Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Tongai Mafidi Mnangagwa, officially spearheads the launch of Hunyani United football club, creating a platform for young footballers in his constituency. The club was formally registered last Friday in the Mashonaland East Division Two league.

Speaking at the launch, Mnangagwa said:

“This is a proud moment for us, and we are committed to nurturing local talent and promoting football in the region, particularly in Hunyani Constituency. This club has been founded to give youth in the constituency a platform to showcase their talents. Only players from Hunyani will be signed for the club.”

He emphasised that the club’s strategy focuses on building strong team spirit and developing players from the grassroots rather than “buying success.” The club’s leadership includes Jeremy Tongai Mnangagwa as chairman, Basil Makoni as coach, Knowmore Chiveve as team manager, and Armstrong Chimanimire overseeing kits.

Political Elites and Sports: Hunyani United in Context

Hunyani United football club arrives amid a trend of well-funded football clubs linked to political elites, highlighting how sports and politics increasingly intersect in Zimbabwe. For the local youth, it offers both opportunity and exposure, nurturing a pipeline of talent who could one day represent Zimbabwe at higher levels.

Hon. Tongai Mafidi Mnangagwa, born 1978, has served in politics since 18, rising through ZANU‑PF ranks to become a deputy minister. Beyond politics, he focuses on youth empowerment, tourism promotion, and community development, making Hunyani United a natural extension of his initiatives.
