The Zimbabwe Warriors made a commanding statement in Francistown as they dismantled Botswana 3-0 in the Mukuru Four-Nation Tournament on Saturday. From the first whistle, Marian Mario Marinica’s men controlled the tempo, dominating possession and territory while creating a flurry of early chances.
The action kicked off brightly. By the fifth minute, Macaulay Bonne’s clever flick found Teenage Hadebe, who unleashed a volley just over the crossbar, an early warning to Botswana of the attacking threat Zimbabwe posed. Moments later, a miscommunication at the back nearly gifted the visitors a goal before EvidenceGodknows Murwira fired over from a promising cut-back. Botswana struggled to find any rhythm as the Warriors pressed relentlessly.
A minor setback came in the 21st minute when centre-back Munashe Garan’anga was forced off due to injury, replaced by Isheanesu Mauchi. Yet, Zimbabwe’s momentum remained undented.
First Half Brilliance
The breakthrough came courtesy of Highlanders forward Mongameli ‘President’ Tshuma, who capped a lively attacking spell to put Zimbabwe ahead. Just minutes later, Bonne, showing why he is at the heart of the Warriors’ creativity, doubled the lead after a well-worked move involving former Dynamos winger Bill Antonio.
By the 39th minute, Takwara nearly added a third with a glancing header from a Murwira set-piece, keeping Botswana on the back foot. And right before halftime, Bonne’s orchestrating brilliance shone once more, laying the ball neatly for Antonio, who calmly slotted home to make it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time.
Half-time: Botswana 0-3 Zimbabwe
Second Half: Controlled and Commanding
Zimbabwe started the second half in control. Daniel Msendami replaced Bill Antonio immediately after the break, with the Warriors maintaining their composure despite Botswana showing improved possession around the hour mark. Botswana earned a penalty in the 64th minute, but Elvis Chipezeze produced a brilliant save to keep the clean sheet intact, further demonstrating the Warriors’ discipline and resilience.
Around the 69th minute, Andrew Mbeba and Shane Maroodza came on for Murwira and Jalai, while Mongameli Tshuma and Bonne were replaced by Navaya and Makwiramiti at the 80th minute, with the scoreline firmly in Zimbabwe’s favour. Despite Botswana’s sporadic bursts, the Warriors managed the game expertly, protecting their advantage and denying any hope of a comeback.
