HARARE, Zimbabwe – Tragedy struck the quiet neighbourhood of Marlborough, Harare on the night of 15 March 2026, when a dedicated church security guard, Mr Walter Mapfumo, was brutally murdered after armed assailants broke into the ZAOGA church on Harare Drive in a savage robbery that left the community in shock.

According to witnesses and life coach Maguranyanga, who shared his account on social media, Mapfumo was on duty when a group of suspected robbers scaled the church’s perimeter wall shortly after 10 PM. The men reportedly seized and overpowered the guard. When he resisted, they gouged out both of his eyes and stabbed him multiple times in the chest, killing him instantly before making off with church funds. Maguranyanga wrote, describing his brief interaction with Mapfumo as a “jolly” and “memorable” one. He said:

“Justice will avenge his callous murder‼️ … I am a hardliner against such callous crime … The bandits that murdered Mr Mapfumo in cold blood meet their end in the next few days to come.”

The level of violence reported, deliberate mutilation followed by fatal stabbing, has horrified residents and underscored growing fears about violent crime in Zimbabwe’s urban centres.

Rising Crime Across Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s latest official statistics paint a worrying picture of nationwide criminal activity. The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) shows crime steadily increasing, with over 321,000 offences recorded in the second quarter of 2025, a 3.5 % rise compared to the previous quarter. Violent crimes, including murder, remain a serious concern, while theft and robbery continue to dominate police reports.

Experts and law enforcement officials have consistently warned that economic hardship, unemployment, and social pressures are contributing to a surge in violent offences. In recent years, police have also publicly expressed concern over what they call “crimes of passion”, violent acts driven by sudden emotional impulses such as jealousy, anger, or disputes.

Mapfumo Remembered as a Dedicated Guard

Mr Mapfumo’s death has struck a chord across Marlborough and faith communities. Friends, parishioners, and colleagues describe him as a committed and friendly security officer whose work went beyond guarding property, he offered peace of mind to all who attended services.

In the hours following the attack, community members expressed sorrow and disbelief that such a violent crime could occur at a place of worship. “He was a good man, always smiling when I saw him,” said one congregant, declining to be named. “To think this would happen here … it doesn’t make sense.”

Community Reactions

The brutal nature of Mr Mapfumo’s murder has left the Marlborough community in shock. Many residents shared their reactions online and in person, expressing grief, fear, and calls for justice.

One local remarked,

“They gouged out his eyes because he probably recognised them. Some people still believe the myth that the retina retains an image of the last things seen by the murdered. I hope that they get caught and face justice.”

A life coach who has dealt with crime cases in the area said,

“I have attended to multiple such cases in this area, and it’s getting deadlier and nastier each time. Seems the thugs are getting sharper and crueler by the day.”

Another neighbour added,

“This is sad and painful. He recently lost his wife, and zvarwadza, kusiya vana dzave nherera. Anga achichengeta vana since his wife’s death, they’re now orphans. I live in the same village with this man.”

These voices paint a picture of a community grappling with loss and fear while demanding swift justice for the heinous crime.

Police Investigation Underway

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed they are investigating the incident, promising swift action. Senior police sources said detectives are pursuing leads and reviewing CCTV footage from around the church, while patrols in Marlborough and surrounding suburbs have been intensified to reassure residents.

At this stage, no arrests have been publicly announced, but authorities have appealed to anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
