South African TV viewers are in a prime-time crisis as beloved soapies Scandal! and Generations: The Legacy now clash head-on, and fans aren’t happy. The popular e.tv drama Scandal! was recently moved from its 19:30 slot to the coveted 20:00 prime time, putting it directly against SABC1’s Generations: The Legacy, a show that has anchored the 8 pm slot for years and built a pan-African fan base.
This scheduling shake-up, part of a bold new e.tv evening lineup launched in mid-January 2026, also moved House of Zwide into the earlier 19:30 slot and shuffled other favourites like Isitha: The Enemy and Smoke & Mirrors.
For many soapie lovers, especially in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and across Southern Africa where Zulu-language dramas are widely watched, the clash has created a dilemma. Traditionally, viewers enjoyed Scandal! warming up the evening before Generations, making both shows a comfortable family ritual. One Zimbabwean fan told ZiGoats:
“This was a deal breaker. Why would they even think of competing with Generations: The Legacy? I’m torn apart. I know there’s the Saturday omnibus, but real-time viewing was a shared evening event. Delayed repeats feel like watching matches after the score is already known.”
The frustration isn’t just about timing. Scandal! is in its final months on air, with e.tv confirming it will conclude in June 2026 after more than two decades as one of the country’s most influential soap operas. For many viewers, moving its slot just months before the finale has felt like a strategic yet emotional twist, turning a beloved comfort show into a competitor.
Generations: The Legacy, meanwhile, isn’t a newcomer. The long-running brand has dominated South African screens for more than a decade, evolving from its original title into one of the nation’s most watched serial dramas. But its viewership has seen ups and downs, with experts pointing to increased competition from other local soaps like Uzalo and Skeem Saam in recent years.
On social media, opinions are sharply divided. Some viewers welcome the change as a bold way to refresh primetime TV, arguing that overlapping schedules could eventually lead to stronger storytelling as each soap pushes for engagement. Others see it as unnecessary interference in a tradition that brought families together, the joy of watching Scandal! and Generations back-to-back.
Critics also note that the TV landscape is evolving: broadcast networks are trying to compete with streaming platforms, audience habits are shifting, and even iconic shows must wrestle with relevance and innovation. But for now, the clash between Scandal! and Generations: The Legacy has become the latest soapie drama off the screen and in the living rooms of millions, a real-time storyline viewers can’t switch away from.
