Harare – A dramatic war of narratives has emerged following an alleged attack linked to opposition politician Tendai Biti, with the Constitution Defenders Forum (CDF) raising an urgent alarm while the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) insists its officers did not witness any assault.
In a strongly worded statement, the Constitution Defenders Forum claimed that its convener, Tendai Biti, was targeted by unidentified men who allegedly assaulted his driver and issued death threats.
“Earlier today, a group of unidentified men driving unregistered Toyota Fortuner GD6, Ford Rangers vehicles besieged the offices of our Convener. The men appeared heavily intoxicated and extremely aggressive. They assaulted our Convener’s driver and the women who were with him, beating them with button sticks while brandishing what appeared to be AK-47 rifles. The driver has sustained injuries.”
The CDF further alleged that the attackers issued direct threats against Biti and warned that the organisation would not be allowed to launch in Zimbabwe.
“During this attack, the assailants loudly declared that CDF will not launch in Zimbabwe and repeatedly threatened that they were going to kill Hon. Tendai Biti. They further stated that they had full knowledge of CDF’s activities and chillingly warned that they would ‘do more than what was done to Professor Lovemore Madhuku.’”
The organisation also claimed that after the alleged incident, Biti and other CDF leaders were followed by suspicious vehicles.
“After the group appeared to have dispersed, Hon. Biti left his office accompanied by other CDF leaders. Moments later, three vehicles suddenly emerged and began following their car. At this moment, we are extremely concerned because we have lost contact with them and cannot ascertain their safety or whereabouts.”

However, the Zimbabwe Republic Police released a statement disputing claims that an assault occurred in the presence of officers deployed at the scene.
In a press statement dated 05 March 2026, the police said:
“For the record, the Zimbabwe Republic Police deployed police officers at Tendai Biti’s offices since morning for the maintenance of law and order. Tendai Biti and his driver left the premises between 1100 hours and 1200 hours with Tendai Biti cordially engaging and discussing with a police officer (Inspector) without any hassles or clashes.”
“The Police officers at the scene did not see or witness anyone beating or assault on Tendai Biti’s driver.”
The police further urged Biti and his driver to formally report the matter if the alleged incident occurred elsewhere.
“If the assault incident occurred at another office which had no ZRP deployment, the Zimbabwe Republic Police urges Tendai Biti and his driver to make an official report so that investigations can be conducted.”
The CDF, however, warned that the developments must be taken seriously given what it described as a broader context of intimidation against activists and political leaders.
“Zimbabweans and the international community must understand that this is happening in a context where activists and political leaders opposing the 2030 constitutional agenda have recently faced abductions, torture, assaults, and intimidation.”
The organisation said it had placed the international community on alert while calling on regional bodies such as SADC and the African Union to closely monitor the situation.
