Former Warriors midfielder George Mbwando has come out strongly in defence of Benjani Mwaruwari, insisting that Highlanders’ winless start should be viewed in the context of what he described as an “unfair” opening fixture list.

Highlanders FC were held to their sixth consecutive draw on Sunday after a hard-fought stalemate away to reigning champions Scottland FC at Rufaro Stadium on Matchday 6.

While pressure continues to build around Mwaruwari, Mbwando believes the bigger picture tells a different story. Mbwando said:

“Benjy is not winning his games so far, but the fixtures were a little unfair from the start.”

The former Warriors star pointed to the calibre of opponents Highlanders have faced in the opening six rounds, arguing that Bosso have been thrown into one of the toughest starts in the league. He said:

“Highlanders started with a derby against Bulawayo Chiefs, and then came Dynamos, Platinum, Simba Bhora, MWOS and Scottland. We are talking about maybe the six best teams in the ZPL league, and Highlanders did notlose a game.”

Mbwando’s assessment is likely to resonate with many Bosso supporters who, despite frustration over the lack of wins, have taken encouragement from the team’s resilience and style of play.

Indeed, Highlanders have shown signs of steady improvement under Mwaruwari. Though victories have remained elusive, the side has looked more organised, competitive and increasingly confident in possession. Added Mbawando nicknamed Zambia:

“I think this is the proper way of looking at things at the moment. Not forgetting Highlanders are playing good football now.”

The former midfielder also praised the wider technical team, giving special mention to assistant coach Zenzo Moyo. He added:

“Big up to Benjy and his technical team including Zenzo. The results will start coming.”

Mbwando’s remarks echo the view already raised in ZiGoats’ own pre-match analysis, which noted that Highlanders’ difficult opening run may have distorted perceptions around Mwaruwari’s start.

With Zimbabwe’s traditional giants beginning to find rhythm, Mbwando believes the league is set for an exciting campaign. Mbwando said:

“Zimbabwean league needs a strong Bosso for maximum entertainment… keep pushing… kuzalunga.”

For now, Bosso remain unbeaten, and perhaps that is the foundation upon which the wins may soon arrive.
