Lorraine Drive Opens to Motorists After Major Rehabilitation in Westgate

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has officially reopened Lorraine Drive to the public, marking the completion of a long‑awaited road rehabilitation project in Harare’s Westgate suburb.

The reopening ceremony, held at the Westgate traffic circle, brought relief to commuters after months of closure, disruption and local frustration over the road’s condition. The ministry said in a statement that “the wait is over” as traffic began flowing once again on the newly upgraded route.

Rehabilitation Timeline and Work Scope

Lorraine Drive’s rehabilitation forms part of Zimbabwe’s broader road improvement agenda under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development. Initial works began in mid‑2024 after repeated complaints that the road collapsed soon after a first rehabilitation, reportedly due to sub‑standard materials and premature opening.

The project was contracted to Fossil Contracting, which was ordered by the ministry to redo the works after early sections showed defects shortly after their first completion. Under a directive from Minister Mhona in September 2024, Fossil was instructed to commence corrective construction.

Community pressure and motoring concerns intensified in late 2024 and early 2025 as Westgate residents and road users repeatedly reported potholes and rough surfaces that hindered daily travel and posed safety risks.

Minister Mhona: A Milestone for Harare Roads

Addressing journalists and local stakeholders, Minister Mhona described the opening as a significant milestone in strengthening transport infrastructure and supporting economic movement within the capital.

He said the rehabilitation and opening of Lorraine Drive underscored government efforts to modernise transport infrastructure “kilometre by kilometre” while improving connectivity to burgeoning residential and commercial suburbs.

The ministry’s press release highlighted the cabinet’s commitment to expanding Zimbabwe’s road network and easing traffic flow at key urban junctions.

Strategic Importance of Lorraine Drive

Lorraine Drive has served as a critical link between the city centre and western suburbs, and its closure had forced motorists to take lengthy detours, increasing travel times and commuter costs.

The road also acted as an important alternate route during earlier rehabilitation of major arteries such as Old Mazowe Road and Lomagundi Way ahead of the 2023 SADC Summit in Mt Hampden.

Looking Ahead

While the road is now open, analysts say residents will be watching closely to see if the new rehabilitation stands the test of traffic and seasonality, particularly after earlier complaints that initial workmanship led to premature degradation.

Transport experts argue that better oversight, consistent maintenance and quality assurance must accompany future road projects to prevent costly redo works and extended disruptions.

The reopening of Lorraine Drive represents a visible win for commuters and city planners alike, but it also serves as a reminder of the challenges facing Zimbabwe’s urban infrastructure system, where timely delivery and quality standards remain key public expectations.
