HARARE / JOHANNESBURG – A major shift has emerged in the high-stakes legal battle between globally acclaimed composer Lebo M and Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi, with fresh efforts now underway to resolve the matter outside court.

Lebo M, best known for his iconic work on Disney’s The Lion King, has reportedly initiated steps toward a structured settlement in the US$27 million lawsuit tied to alleged intellectual property infringements.

In a statement issued from Johannesburg on March 27, Lebo M’s team confirmed a deliberate shift from confrontation to engagement. Said spokesperson Tshepo Mboni:

“Lebo M confirms he has instructed his team to reach out to Learnmore while he is currently on tour, in an effort to find common ground and bring this matter to a constructive close.”

The outreach follows the appointment of an independent intermediary, a move insiders describe as a calculated attempt to create what has been termed a “measured and dignified pathway toward resolution.”

Sources close to the matter say the development represents a “white flag” moment, a signal of willingness to de-escalate tensions while still protecting intellectual property and cultural heritage.

While the lawsuit remains active, the tone of engagement marks a significant turning point in a case that has drawn widespread attention across both legal and entertainment circles.

At the heart of the dispute is a joke made by Jonasi referencing the famous opening Zulu chant from The Lion King, a moment deeply tied to Lebo M’s artistic legacy.

Now, both parties are expected to explore a settlement framework built around:

  • Mutual respect
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Legal clarity
  • Long-term reputational alignment

No formal agreement has been reached yet, but the shift suggests both sides are open to avoiding a prolonged courtroom battle.

A Comedian Under Pressure

For Jonasi, the legal fight has been both professional and deeply personal.

In a public appeal, the comedian revealed the financial strain of defending himself against a multimillion-dollar claim, launching a GoFundMe campaign to cover legal costs.

“Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters… I was recently hit with a $27 million lawsuit by renowned artist Lebohang Morake (Lebo M) over a joke I made… What started as a bit of humor has escalated into a devastating legal battle.

I am a passionate creator who never intended harm, but I now face overwhelming legal fees just to defend my right to speak and tell jokes.”

At the time of writing, Jonasi had raised over US$18,500 towards a US$20,000 target, a reflection of growing public sympathy and support.

Balancing Law, Culture And Creativity

The case sits at the complex intersection of intellectual property law, artistic expression, and cultural ownership, issues that continue to shape Africa’s evolving creative economy.

For Lebo M, the move reinforces his image not only as a global creative force, but as a custodian of African cultural heritage. For Jonasi, it is a test of the limits of comedy in an era of heightened legal scrutiny.

For now, all eyes remain on the negotiations.

If successful, the talks could bring an end to one of the region’s most closely watched legal disputes, and set an important precedent on how creative conflicts are resolved in the digital age.
