Many Zimbabweans in the diaspora face a common and stressful problem: an expired passport while needing urgent travel home. This becomes even more complicated when the person also holds foreign residency, such as South African permanent residence, and must travel for important reasons like obtaining a national ID or renewing documents.

The key point is simple: airlines do not accept expired passports. Even if your nationality is Zimbabwean, you will most likely be denied boarding unless you have an approved emergency travel document.
In this situation, the first step is to contact the nearest Zimbabwean Embassy or Consulate in South Africa. They can issue an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) or temporary travel clearance, depending on your case. This document is specifically designed for citizens whose passports have expired, been lost, or cannot be renewed in time.
If the applicant has a medical condition and needs to fly urgently, this should be clearly stated when applying. Supporting documents such as medical reports can help speed up the process.
Another possible route is applying through South African authorities for a temporary travel document, but this is usually more complicated and slower for non-citizens. In most cases, Zimbabwean missions remain the fastest solution.
Travelling by road is sometimes considered, but it still requires valid travel documentation at border posts. Without proper papers, entry into Zimbabwe may be refused.
Once in Zimbabwe, the individual can apply for a national ID and begin passport renewal at the Registrar General’s Office.
For families in similar situations, the safest approach is: do not attempt to travel on an expired passport, and never assume border officials will make exceptions.
The system is strict, but there are legal pathways designed exactly for urgent humanitarian and administrative travel cases like this.
