Zimbabwe’s convincing win over Botswana was more than just a positive result on the scoreboard, it was a statement of intent from coach Marian Mario Marinica and a Warriors side eager to restore belief after recent disappointment.
The Warriors produced a disciplined and clinical display to register a rare 3-0 victory, their first clean-sheet three-goal haul in decades, leaving fans in Francistown and back home with plenty to celebrate. Zimbabwe got goals from Mongameli Tshuma, Macauley Bonne and Bill Antonio while Mr Carling Knockout Cup, Elvis Chipezeze kept a clean saving a penalty in the second half.
Speaking after the match, Marinica admitted the contest was far from straightforward despite the dominant scoreline. He said:
“I would say that was quite a difficult match. Yes, you could say that we made it easy at some point, but Botswana is not an easy team.”
The coach was quick to acknowledge the threat posed by the hosts, particularly after the break. He said:
“They have good players who are quite fast, and they gave us different problems in the second half. On the other hand, the players did an absolutely perfect job looking at the way we started in the first half.”
Marinica revealed that Zimbabwe’s opening-half control was no accident, crediting a tactical blueprint that worked exactly as intended. The Romanian tactician added:
“We had a game plan. The game plan worked to perfection in the first half.”
Preparation Was A Key Factor
The match also served as an important test for the coach as he continues to shape his squad, blending experienced players with emerging talent. He said:
“I’m extremely pleased we had a little bit of time, not too much time, and we tried to integrate some players with more experience with some players with a bit less experience, and it was a fantastic exercise for us.”
He also stressed the importance of more competitive friendly matches, describing them as crucial for player development and preparation for major tournaments.
One of the standout performers on the night was Bill Antonio, who was warmly applauded by supporters at the final whistle. The forward summed up the mood in the camp in simple terms. The Belgium-based winger said:
“As a team we are happy. It’s always good to win. It’s for the country, it’s for the fans.”
The victory now sets up an intriguing clash against Zambia on Tuesday, with Marinica hoping the same sharpness and defensive discipline will carry into another stern regional test.
For Zimbabwe, this was more than a friendly win, it was a timely reminder that the Warriors may be finding their rhythm again.
