In a momentous boost for African football, a record nine African nations have officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the most the continent has ever sent to a single tournament. The expanded 48-team World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada from 11 June to 19 July 2026 means more slots for Africa’s best, and fans across the continent are celebrating.

Nine African Teams Headed to North America

The following teams clinched their spots by topping their respective CAF qualifying groups, a milestone achievement for African football:

  1. Morocco
  2. Tunisia
  3. Egypt
  4. Algeria
  5. Ghana
  6. Senegal
  7. South Africa
  8. Cape Verde, making their first-ever World Cup appearance
  9. Ivory Coast

Among these, South Africa’s qualification is especially memorable, it marks the team’s first World Cup appearance since they hosted the tournament in 2010.

Africa’s achievements have been lauded regionally. The African Union Commission Chairperson congratulated the teams, saying their performance “brings pride and joy to the entire continent” and “carries the hopes of over a billion Africans.”

One More Spot Up for Grabs

While nine teams are confirmed, a tenth African nation may yet join them. The Democratic Republic of Congo won the CAF playoff tournament in November 2025, defeating Nigeria to reach the inter-continental playoff tournament scheduled for March 2026 in Mexico, where they will compete for one of the final two World Cup berths.
