HARARE – Journalist Plot Mhako has sounded the alarm on pedestrian safety in Zimbabwe as police investigate a fatal hit‑and‑run that occurred on 31 January 2026 at the 36 km peg of Bulawayo–Plumtree Road. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) report that two pedestrians were struck by an unidentified vehicle and died on the spot. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward. Read the full police report obtained by ZiGoats:
“The ZRP is investigating a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident which occurred on 31/01/26 at the 36 km peg along Bulawayo–Plumtree Road. An unknown motorist, driving an unidentified vehicle, struck two pedestrians who were walking along the road. Both victims sustained severe injuries and died on the spot. Anyone with information to contact any nearest police station. No to Hit and Run Road Traffic Accidents”
Mhako noted,
“In Zim pedestrians are not respected on the road even if they have a right of way. When crossing a traffic light or a Zebra crossing mota dzinenge dzichi raver kuda kutokutsika chitsitsinho.”
Zimbabwe’s road safety record is grim. Human error contributes to over 85% of accidents, with reckless driving, speeding, and distracted motorists being major factors. In 2025 alone, over 28,000 road accidents were reported nationwide, claiming more than 1,000 lives, with pedestrians making up a significant portion. Urban roads in Harare remain particularly hazardous, as drivers routinely ignore right-of-way laws.
Experts highlight that reckless driving, poor enforcement, and inadequate road infrastructure fuel the carnage. Hit-and-run cases exacerbate public anger, leaving families grieving and justice delayed.
Authorities emphasise the need for prompt reporting and stricter enforcement. Mhako’s warning reinforces a stark reality: without a cultural and systemic shift, Zimbabwean pedestrians will remain the most vulnerable road users.
