Zimbabwe’s hopes of securing the international futures of Shumaira Mheuka and Trey Nyoni remain alive after the two highly rated youngsters were named in England’s Under-20 and Under-21 squads for November’s international fixtures.
Mheuka, who plays for Scottish giants Celtic on loan from Chelsea, has been included in England’s Under-20 squad, while Liverpool midfielder Nyoni has earned a place in Lee Carsley’s Under-21 selection.
The announcements offer Zimbabwean football fans some relief following growing speculation that Nyoni, in particular, could be edging closer to a senior England call-up under head coach Thomas Tuchel.
The 19-year-old midfielder has attracted considerable attention through his development at Liverpool, with his technical ability, composure and performances at senior level strengthening his reputation as one of England’s promising young talents.
His continued progression has raised fears that Zimbabwe could lose the opportunity to convince him to represent the Warriors.
However, the latest selections mean both players remain on England’s youth international pathway rather than the senior national team.
Nyoni And Mheuka Still Eligible For Zimbabwe
Both youngsters have Zimbabwean heritage and remain eligible to represent the Warriors, giving the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) an opportunity to continue its efforts to persuade them to choose their ancestral home.
Zimbabwean supporters have increasingly called for the two players to embrace their heritage and strengthen the national team, particularly as the country seeks to build a competitive squad capable of challenging at continental level.
Nyoni’s situation has attracted particular interest because of his association with Liverpool’s senior setup and the growing expectations surrounding his future.
A senior England call-up would undoubtedly intensify the competition for his international allegiance, although his current Under-21 involvement does not automatically rule out a future switch to Zimbabwe.
Importantly, youth international appearances do not, on their own, permanently tie a footballer to a country under FIFA eligibility regulations. Even senior appearances can, in certain circumstances, allow a player to change national association, subject to specific conditions.
This means Zimbabwe’s hopes are not extinguished by the latest England selections.
England Fixtures
Mheuka’s England Under-20 teammates will face Czechia on November 12 at Mansfield’s One Call Stadium before travelling to Portugal for another Euro Elite League encounter on November 16.
Nyoni and the England Under-21 side will take on Portugal on November 13 before facing France on November 16. Both matches will be played at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol.
The fixtures provide another opportunity for the youngsters to develop within England’s international setup.
ZIFA’s Efforts To Attract Foreign-born Talent
Under president Nqobile Magwizi, ZIFA has been seeking to assemble stronger national teams by widening its recruitment efforts to include Zimbabwean-eligible players based abroad.
The association has increasingly looked beyond the domestic league, with several foreign-based players of Zimbabwean heritage being brought into the national team setup.
The strategy is aimed at expanding the country’s talent pool, improving competition for places and building a stronger Warriors side.
Securing players such as Nyoni and Mheuka would represent a significant boost, given their development within some of Europe’s most respected football academies.
For now, Zimbabwean supporters will have to wait and see whether the two youngsters eventually choose to represent the country of their heritage.
Their international futures remain undecided, but the door to the Warriors is still open.
