Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe “Guilty Plea Deal” Collapses As State Rejects Deportation Bid

A proposed plea bargain involving Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe has collapsed after South African prosecutors rejected an arrangement that would have seen him plead guilty to immigration offences in exchange for deportation.

The case, heard at the Alexandra Regional Court, involves Mugabe and co-accused Tobias Matonhodze, who are both facing serious criminal charges linked to a February shooting incident in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

Mugabe’s legal team had attempted to resolve the matter through what they believed was a practical compromise. Under the proposal, he would plead guilty only to immigration violations, avoid trial on more serious charges, and be deported from South Africa. However, the State firmly rejected the arrangement.

Prosecutors insisted that Mugabe must stand trial on the full scope of charges, which include attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and immigration-related offences. The rejection means the case will now proceed through the normal criminal trial process, significantly raising the stakes for the accused.

Matonhodze is also facing attempted murder charges and remains central to the prosecution’s case, which stems from allegations that a firearm was discharged during an altercation involving an employee at a private residence in February.

The collapse of the deportation deal signals a firm stance by the State that the matter cannot be reduced to administrative immigration breaches alone, but must be tested in court as a violent crime case.

Plea negotiations are common in South African criminal proceedings, especially where immigration status and criminal liability overlap. However, such agreements require prosecutorial consent, which in this instance was not granted.

With the deal off the table, both accused will now have to answer to the full charges in court. The case is expected to continue attracting public attention due to the high-profile nature of the Mugabe name and the seriousness of the allegations involved.

The next court proceedings are expected to focus on pre-trial issues as the matter moves closer to full trial.
