The victims, who were bystanders at a previous accident scene, include:
- Khumbulani Tshuma (32),
- Senzangakhona Moyo (43),
- Victor Moyo (39),
- Dumoluhle Ncube (30), and
- Fundani Moyo (53).
Two victims are yet to be identified.
ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:
“This is a tragic incident, and we urge the public to exercise caution when approaching or gathering at accident scenes. Crowding at these sites significantly increases the risk of secondary accidents. Only those providing essential assistance should remain on site.”
Police reports confirm the victims were either stopped in vehicles or assisting at a previous accident when they were struck by a truck. The ZRP advises all motorists to reduce speed near accident sites, switch on hazard lights, and place reflective warning triangles to alert oncoming traffic. Nyathi added:
“The safety of road users is paramount. Vigilance and adherence to traffic rules can save lives.”
Investigations are ongoing as the ZRP works with families of the deceased. The incident highlights the dangers of highways in Zimbabwe, especially for spectators and those helping at accident scenes.
