A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer has appeared in court facing murder charges, reigniting public debate over law enforcement conduct and accountability. The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed that Bhekimpilo Ncube (35), stationed at Chikukwa Police Base in Chimanimani, was charged following the death of Godman Mtimba (34). According to NPAZ, the events unfolded as follows:
  • On 25 February 2026, Mtimba, the deceased, reportedly behaved violently in the Chikukwa area.
  • The following day, 26 February 2026, he was apprehended and taken to Chikukwa Business Centre, where Ncube was reportedly drinking beer.
  • Allegedly, Mtimba attempted to resist while Ncube tried to remove his beard using a knife. During the altercation, Ncube sliced Mtimba on the chin and cheek, inflicting severe injuries.
  • The injured Mtimba was rushed to Mutambara Hospital, where he later died from his wounds.
  • After the death, Ncube surrendered himself to police and remains in custody pending further court proceedings.
The case has intensified public discourse around police accountability. Some members of the public drew parallels to the 2025 Zaka incident, where two CID detectives were fatally shot by Daniel Munyanyi. While Munyanyi was later convicted of multiple robberies, parts of the public expressed indifference toward the detectives’ deaths, citing alleged police misconduct. Legal experts note that this case underscores the importance of balancing police authority with public trust. Said a governance analyst:
“When officers abuse power, even in seemingly minor actions, it erodes confidence in the justice system and fuels perceptions of injustice.”
Observers and human rights advocates are now closely following Ncube’s trial, emphasising that transparent judicial proceedings are essential to uphold public confidence and ensure that law enforcement officers are held accountable for misconduct.
