The Academy said the new intake reflects its commitment to bringing together diverse expertise to tackle complex global challenges. Linda Oyama, a representative of the UK Young Academy Executive Group, said:
“When we set out the UK Young Academy’s 2023–2028 Strategic Plan, one of our core missions was to convene diverse voices to share ideas and improve decision-making.
This year’s cohort sees the highest proportion of new members coming from non-academic settings of any UK Young Academy cohort so far. Continuing to bring together members from diverse backgrounds will ensure we embed interdisciplinarity across all our work.”
A Global Platform For Emerging Leaders
Membership of the UK Young Academy runs for five years and offers a platform for early-career professionals to collaborate across disciplines on issues ranging from science and technology to policy, business, and culture.
The newly announced members include biomedical scientists, journalists, engineers, fashion researchers, policy experts, and creative writers, reflecting the Academy’s growing emphasis on cross-sector collaboration.
The group will formally begin their roles on 23 March 2026, with an induction meeting scheduled later this month where members will meet and share ideas about future projects and partnerships.
Chingonzo’s Vision: AI, Innovation And Collaboration
Speaking after the announcement, Chingoonzo said he was honoured to join the network of emerging leaders and believes interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial in addressing today’s rapidly evolving challenges. The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) graduate said:
“I am pleased to share that I’ve been selected as a member of the UK Young Academy, joining a cohort of emerging leaders working across research, industry, policy, and the creative sectors.
What drew me to the Academy is simple: many of the most interesting and important challenges today do not sit neatly within one discipline.”
Chingonzo said the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries and making cross-sector collaboration more important than ever. He explained:
“As technology, particularly AI, reshapes how we work and create value, the solutions we build will increasingly require perspectives from multiple domains.”
He added that he hopes to contribute to initiatives that improve AI fluency, helping professionals move from curiosity about artificial intelligence to confident and responsible use in their work.
Growing Zimbabwean Footprint In Global Innovation
Chingonzo’s appointment reflects the growing presence of Zimbabwean researchers and innovators on global platforms, particularly in fields linked to digital transformation, data science, and emerging technologies.
For Zimbabwe’s technology ecosystem, his selection is also a reminder that local talent continues to influence conversations shaping the future of technology, innovation, and interdisciplinary research worldwide.
