Harare – Zimbabwe’s diplomatic community has reacted with shock and sorrow following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, a development that has triggered fresh geopolitical tension across the Middle East.

In a formal condolence message sent to the Iranian Embassy in Harare, the Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy (ZID) expressed solidarity with Iran after the veteran cleric was killed during military strikes on Iranian territory on 28 February 2026.

The institution addressed the message to His Excellency Amir Hossein Hosseini, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Zimbabwe.

In the letter, the institute’s chairperson, Vova Abednigo Chikanda, stated:

“Allow me, on behalf of the Chairperson, Board of Directors, Alumni and Students of the Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy (ZID), to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Government and People of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the recent aggression by the United States of America and the Zionist regime on Saturday, 28 February 2026, on Iranian territory, which resulted in the martyrdom of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.”

The message further noted that the attack did not only claim the life of Iran’s long-serving spiritual leader but also caused significant civilian casualties.

“This grievous event has brought profound sorrow and loss to the nation.”

A Strike That Shook Global Politics

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had led Iran since 1989, was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Middle Eastern politics.

His death reportedly occurred during a coordinated military strike targeting strategic Iranian leadership structures in Tehran.

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation from some governments and institutions, while others view it as part of escalating tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States.

The Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy described the humanitarian impact of the attack as deeply troubling.

“We are deeply saddened by this devastating development and the immense pain it has caused to the families, colleagues and communities of all the victims.”

The message added that the loss extended far beyond political leadership.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected during this period of mourning, especially the bereaved families, the injured and those facing displacement and the long road to recovery.”

Zimbabwe Expresses Solidarity

Zimbabwe has maintained diplomatic relations with Iran for decades, with cooperation spanning energy, agriculture, mining and education.

In its statement, the Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy said the country stands with the Iranian people during what it described as a difficult national moment.

“In this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with the Iranian people and express our sincere hope that strength, unity and resilience will guide the nation through this period of mourning and transition and war.”

The institute also called for healing and recovery for victims of the attack.

“May comfort be granted to those who grieve and may the memory of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and all the victims inspire a renewed commitment to peace, stability and the welfare of the nation.”

Uncertainty Over the Future

The death of Khamenei has created significant uncertainty about Iran’s political future.

As Supreme Leader, he held ultimate authority over Iran’s military, judiciary and strategic direction, making him one of the most powerful figures in the Islamic Republic.

His assassination has raised concerns among analysts about potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East and the possibility of retaliatory actions.

But for Zimbabwe’s diplomatic community, the immediate focus remains on solidarity and mourning.

The Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy concluded its message by extending formal condolences to the Iranian government and its people.

“Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of our highest consideration and deepest sympathy.”
