The message, published Monday amid rising regional tensions, makes clear that U.S. citizens must make their own security arrangements if they choose to leave.

“The U.S. Embassy is not in a position at this time to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel.”

The Embassy has also directed all U.S. government employees and their families to shelter in place.

“As a result of the current security situation throughout the region, the U.S. Embassy has directed that all U.S. government employees and their family members continue to shelter in place in and near their residences until further notice.”

Shuttles to Egypt Now Operating

Israel’s Ministry of Tourism has begun operating shuttles to the Taba Border Crossing with Egypt as of March 2. However, U.S. officials made clear they are not endorsing the arrangement.

“The U.S. Embassy cannot make any recommendation (for or against) the Ministry of Tourism’s shuttle.”

“If you choose to avail yourself of this option to depart, the U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety.”

Registration for the shuttle must be completed through the Israeli Ministry of Tourism’s evacuation form. The Embassy stressed the information is being shared “as a courtesy to those wishing to leave Israel.”

Buses are stationed at the following meeting points:

  • Herzliya: Train Station Parking Lot
  • Haifa: Yad HaShmona Train Station Parking Lot
  • Jerusalem: Teddy Stadium, East Parking Lot
  • Tel Aviv: Savidor Center Train Station Parking

The Taba land crossing into Egypt is operating 24 hours a day, but officials warned that “security conditions can change without warning, closing any border crossing.”

Travelers may face visa fees depending on their travel plans within Egypt. The Embassy recommends paying toll fees in advance online.

“The toll is valid only for the specific date of purchase and cannot be changed or refunded.”

Jordan Exit Route Also Available – With Time Limits

Passengers seeking to cross into Jordan may travel to Eilat and continue by taxi to the Yitzhak Rabin (Wadi Araba) Border Crossing.

On March 2, the southern crossing into Jordan accepts its last passengers at 1900.

Queen Alia International Airport remains open, with limited flights including services by Royal Jordanian Airlines. Travelers are advised to check directly with airlines and expect delays.

Security Incidents “Often Take Place Without Warning”

The Embassy underscored the volatile security environment, warning Americans to remain alert at all times.

“Security incidents, such as mortar, rocket, and missile fire, and unmanned aircraft system (UAS) intrusions, often take place without any warning.”

“Treat all such alerts as real. Follow the instructions from local authorities and seek shelter immediately.”

The Embassy noted that additional travel restrictions on U.S. government personnel may be imposed without notice.

Enroll in STEP

“Enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency.”

Americans are also advised to:

  • Be aware of surroundings at all times
  • Know the location of the nearest bomb shelter
  • Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings
  • Monitor local media for updates
  • Follow all instructions from local authorities

The Bottom Line

“The following is provided for your information as you make your own security plans.”

For Americans in Israel, the message is clear: remain cautious, prepare independently, and understand that the security environment “is complex and can change quickly.”
