In one of the most dramatic finales in Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) history, Senegal walked off the pitch at the AFCON final against hosts Morocco after a late VAR‑awarded penalty sparked outrage among the Teranga Lions. The score was locked at 0‑0 deep into stoppage time when the referee pointed to the spot following a video review, a decision that triggered on‑field protest and chaos.

Tensions had been simmering. Senegal’s players and coaching staff had already voiced concerns about security arrangements, accommodation and limited ticket allocation ahead of the match, publicly accusing organisers of unfair treatment and inadequate protection for their squad and supporters. Those complaints were lodged formally with the CAF and highlighted in pre‑match press conferences.

When the penalty was awarded, players initially refused to continue, with the coach signalling for the team to walk off in protest. Senegal star Sadio Mané encouraged calm, attempting to rally his teammates back onto the pitch.

They eventually came back and Brahim Diaz took the penalty that went straight into Eduard Mendy’s hands.
