HARARE – Danny “Deco” Phiri, one of Zimbabwe’s most respected midfield generals, has turned the page from playing to coaching, returning to his old club Chicken Inn As an assistant coach after a storied career that spanned top leagues at home and abroad.

The 35-year-old “Deco” quietly wound down his playing days in 2025 after a long and decorated career that included captaining Chicken Inn, a lengthy stint with South Africa’s Golden Arrows, and significant service with the Zimbabwe Warriors. Though he publicly quashed retirement rumours late in 2024, insisting he still had legs to carry him on the pitch, he ultimately transitioned toward mentoring and coaching after his final playing spell with Gwanda Pirates in Zimbabwe’s Central Region Division One.

Phiri’s move into coaching began when he signed for Talen Vision in August 2025, a club in the Southern Region Division One, where his experience was used not just on the field but as an informal teacher of younger players.  While club announcements at that time framed him as a player signing, Phiri’s presence had the unmistakable feel of a future coach, and by late 2025 he had fully embraced that role, supporting talent development and shaping tactics at the grassroots level.

Now, Deco returns to Chicken Inn, affectionately known as the GameCocks, as assistant coach of the club’s development team, bringing his wealth of on-field experience and tactical nous back to the club where he first made his name. He will be part of a young technical team led by Guide Goddard as head coach, with fellow former club player Ben Nyahunzvi also serving as assistant. A local coach told ZiGoats:

“Deco was one of those players who didn’t always dominate headlines, but his impact was felt every time he stepped onto the pitch. Calm, disciplined and intelligent in his positioning, he anchored midfield with quiet authority.”

His leadership style, understated but effective, resonated with teammates and fans alike throughout his career.

Phiri’s playing history is rich with highlights. He first emerged as a standout anchorman in Zimbabwe’s top flight with Chicken Inn, helping the club win the 2015 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title and earning the Soccer Star of the Year award that same season. He subsequently moved to South Africa, making nearly 100 appearances for Golden Arrows in the Premier Soccer League before returning home later in his career.

Even as his playing years wound down, his influence was felt off the pitch. At Gwanda Pirates in early 2025, coaches lauded Deco’s guiding presence on the field, with veteran teammates and young players alike benefiting from his strategic understanding and calming presence during games.

Phiri’s transition to coaching fits a broader trend in modern football: experienced, cerebral midfielders moving into mentorship and tactical roles. His return to Chicken Inn isn’t just sentimental, it signals a deliberate push by the club to build a development pipeline that blends veteran experience with emerging talent. Under his watch, young prospects will learn not only positional play and technique but also the mental discipline required to excel in Zimbabwean and regional football.

Former GameCocks defender Goddard, now head coach, praised Phiri’s appointment: “His leadership, understanding of the game and ability to connect with young players will be invaluable.” Sources inside the club say Phiri’s coaching duties will include tactical planning, match analysis, training sessions and close mentorship of midfield talent.

For many fans, seeing Deco back where it all began is poetic justice: a local hero giving back to the next generation, ensuring that his legacy in Zimbabwean football extends far beyond his playing days. His journey from midfield anchor to mentor mirrors that of other greats who leaned into coaching, proving that the influence of a great footballer can be even stronger off the pitch.
