CAPS United’s bright start to the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season came to an abrupt halt on Thursday after Ngezi Platinum Stars handed Takesure Chiragwi his first defeat of the campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Baobab Stadium.

It was a dramatic Matchday 5 afternoon across the country, with Dynamos grinding out a narrow victory over MWOS at Rufaro, while Scottland and TelOne shared the spoils in a pulsating four-goal thriller at Ascot.
For Chiragwi, the defeat carried extra weight. Returning to face his former side, the CAPS United coach had guided the Green Machine through an unbeaten opening stretch, but football often has a way of scripting its own storylines, and this one ended in frustration.
CAPS START BRIGHTLY BUT NGEZI LAND THE DECISIVE BLOW
The opening exchanges at Baobab suggested CAPS United had arrived with intent.
Wadi was among the early bright sparks, twice leading promising forward movements that forced the Ngezi defence to stay alert. By the 14th minute, both sides were still locked at 0-0, but the visitors looked the more progressive in possession.
At the back, Chigwida was solid, cutting out a dangerous Ngezi move around the 20-minute mark as CAPS tried to build from deep.
As the half progressed, the Green Machine kept knocking.
Shandirwa came close around the half-hour mark, weaving through before hitting the side netting. Moments later, Wadi once again found space in attack, only for the Ngezi goalkeeper to deny him.
It was one of those periods where CAPS seemed to be building towards an opener.
Then came the turning point.
Right at the stroke of halftime, Ashwin Karengesha struck in the 44th minute, silencing the CAPS bench and sending the hosts into the break with a slender lead.
Halftime: Ngezi Platinum Stars 1-0 CAPS United
It was a cruel scoreline for the visitors, who had enjoyed long spells of control without the reward.
SECOND-HALF PUSH ENDS IN PENALTY PAIN
The second half opened with urgency from CAPS United.
Knowing they needed a response, Chiragwi turned to his bench, introducing Mupomba, Chamboko and Mukombedzi to inject fresh legs and attacking thrust.
The pressure began to build.
Shandirwa again threatened, driving forward and forcing the hosts to retreat.
Then came CAPS’ golden opportunity.
In the 76th minute, the referee pointed to the spot.
A lifeline. A chance to level. A moment that could have changed the entire afternoon.
But football can be brutally unforgiving.
Chigwida’s penalty was saved.
The CAPS supporters behind the goal were left stunned, while the Ngezi bench erupted in celebration.
That miss proved decisive.
Despite late pressure and desperate forward surges, CAPS could not find a way through.
Full time: Ngezi Platinum Stars 1-0 CAPS United
Chiragwi’s unbeaten start is over.
For Ngezi, it was a statement win. For CAPS, it was a reminder that dominance without end product often comes at a cost.
DYNAMOS GET THE JOB DONE AT RUFARO
At Rufaro Stadium, Dynamos left it late but did enough to see off a stubborn MWOS side.
The Glamour Boys controlled large spells of the first half, with Jairos Kasondo central to most of their attacking play.
Inside 12 minutes, he won a free kick in a dangerous area, but his effort cannoned off the wall.
Shave then tested the keeper from distance, while Pio’s fierce effort later in the half forced another strong save from MWOS goalkeeper Tedious Baye, who kept the visitors in the contest with a series of fine stops.
MWOS, however, were more than competitive.
Valentine Katsande caused problems from set pieces, and Ndeunyema came inches away with a thunderous long-range effort that flew just over.
The visitors almost stunned the hosts after the restart, only for Dynamos to scramble the ball off the line.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 72nd minute.
Dynamos won a penalty.
Up stepped Kasondo, who kept his composure to convert.
73’ – GOAL! Dynamos 1-0 MWOS
That proved enough.
Full time: Dynamos 1-0 MWOS
A professional and disciplined result for DeMbare.
SCOTTLAND ROAR IN ENTERTAINING ASCOT BATTLE
Over at Ascot Stadium, Scottland and TelOne served up one of the matches of the day.
Scottland struck first through Terrence Dzvukamanja in the 28th minute, finishing clinically after a beautifully weighted through ball from Emmanuel Ziocha.
The lead, however, lasted only until early in the second half.
47’ – TelOne equalise through Jerry Chipangura
Scottland responded almost instantly.
Just a minute later, Emmanuel Ziocha found the net himself after being teed up by Khama Billiat.
At 2-1, Scottland looked in control.
But TelOne refused to fold.
A dangerous free kick in the 72nd minute found the back of the net to make it 2-2.
From there, both teams had moments, but neither could land the killer blow.
When the WiFi Boys thought they had salvaged a point against the reigning champions, captain Walter Musona struck a third goal for Mabviravira in the 84th minute to secure maximum points, much to the chagrin of the Midlands-based club.
Full time: TelOne 2-3 Scottland
A fair result in a thrilling encounter. Unfair for the hosts.
HARDROCK CONTINUE TO IMPRESS
Hardrock also made headlines with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Herentals.
Wilfred Madzungu was the standout performer, bagging an early brace, including a penalty, before Last Nyilenda added a third.
