The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of a driver linked to a fatal hit-and-run incident that turned into a devastating multiple-victim crash in Chitungwiza.

In a statement seen by ZiGoats, police said Forget Chamuzambara (40) was arrested in connection with a “road traffic accident” that occurred on 3 February 2026 along Chirambahuyo Road in Unit D, Chitungwiza. The statement read in part:

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Forget Chamuzambara (40) in connection with a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 03/02/26 along Chirambahuyo Road, Unit D, Chitungwiza.”

According to the police, Chamuzambara was driving a Mazda 323 when he allegedly struck a 16-year-old girl who was walking along the roadside. Instead of stopping, the driver reportedly fled the scene. While attempting to escape, he is said to have lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road, crashing through the gate of a nearby residential property.

The out-of-control car struck three people who were seated near the gate, a 75-year-old woman and two young children. Tragically, a two-year-old boy died on the spot.

The teenage girl who was initially hit also died as a result of the incident.

Police said the elderly woman and the surviving child sustained severe head injuries and were rushed to Chitungwiza Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased victims were taken to the same hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing.

Hit-and-run incidents remain a serious concern on Zimbabwe’s roads. In some cases, drivers flee accident scenes out of panic or fear of legal consequences, a reaction that often worsens the outcome for victims who might otherwise receive urgent help.

Police continue to urge motorists to stop immediately after any accident and to report incidents without delay.
