In a blockbuster show of support for Zimbabwean football, prominent businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo has donated US$300,000 to Scottland FC to kick-start their title defence after winning the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League in their debut season. The club unveiled the windfall on social media, hailing Chivayo for the timely backing that will “go a long way in motivating the squad” as Mabviravira prepare for another campaign at the top.

Scottland FC’s rise, from Northern Region League champions to PSL winners, has been coupled with Chivayo’s high-profile support in recent seasons, including past pledges and rewards following their historic promotion. Reports suggest Chivayo previously honoured a US$1 million pledge tied to the club’s elevation to the top flight, including vehicle gifts and extra cash to strengthen their PSL journey.
Chivayo is no stranger to backing local clubs. In 2025, he pledged a US$1 million sponsorship package to Highlanders FC, one of Zimbabwe’s oldest and most beloved teams, aimed at boosting player welfare, recruitment and club stability. The second tranche of that funding was also disbursed later in the year, supporting infrastructure and training upgrades.
The Scottland FC injection comes at a time when private funding is increasingly filling gaps in Zimbabwean club football, where many teams struggle with tight budgets, unpaid players and limited sponsorship. Chivayo’s backing, both to champions and heritage clubs, has sparked debate among fans: some see it as a lifeline for the sport, while others caution about over-dependence on single benefactors.
What’s clear is that Chivayo’s US$300k boost adds serious momentum to Scottland’s push for back-to-back honours and highlights the growing role of private cash in shaping the domestic game.
