HARARE, Zimbabwe — The name John Travolta has made headlines in Zimbabwe, but this time it has nothing to do with Hollywood.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of a 34-year-old man named John Travolta in connection with an armed robbery at Warren Park D Shopping Centre in Harare.
And yes, it is that John Travolta — at least by name.
The suspect is not the American actor and Grease star of the same name.
Police said the Zimbabwean Travolta and an accomplice, who remains at large, allegedly raided a shop at Warren Park D at about 7pm on Saturday, 8 August 2026.
The two men were allegedly armed with a pistol and wearing balaclavas when they confronted the shopkeeper.
According to a police statement seen by ZiGoats, the suspects stole US$3,813 and ZiG1,200 before fleeing.
“The ZRP confirms the arrest of John Travolta (34) in connection with a robbery case which occurred at Warren Park D Shopping Centre on 08/08/26 at around 1900 hours,” police said.
“The suspect, together with his accomplice who is yet to be arrested, allegedly pounced on a shop while armed with a pistol and covering their faces with balaclavas.”
Police said members of the public pursued the suspects and managed to apprehend Travolta.
Officers later recovered part of the stolen money from him, US$1,071 and ZiG775, according to the police.
The second suspect remains on the run.
A Case Of An Unusual Name
The arrest has attracted attention largely because of the suspect’s unusual name.
The police statement does not say whether John Travolta is the suspect’s birth name, a nickname or a stage name.
However, unusual names inspired by international celebrities are not unheard of in Zimbabwe.
Some Zimbabwean parents have named their children after famous actors, musicians, footballers and other international personalities.
Names such as Eric Knight Maphosa, Denzel Washington Choga, Jean Claude Van Damme Tarubva and Jet Li Munemo have appeared in Zimbabwean communities.
In some cases, the celebrity connection goes beyond the first name, with parents giving their children surnames associated with their favourite stars.
So, while the name may sound like a Hollywood headline, there is little reason to assume the Zimbabwean suspect is using a pseudonym.
Definitely Not The Hollywood Travolta
The age of the suspect alone makes it clear that he is not the Hollywood actor.
The legendary American actor John Travolta was born on 18 February 1954, making him 72 in 2026.
The Zimbabwean Travolta, according to police, is 34.
The actor is best known for films including Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction and Face/Off.
The Zimbabwean suspect, meanwhile, is facing a very different kind of spotlight.
Police have not released photographs of the arrested suspect, and his accomplice remains at large.
The robbery investigation is continuing.
As with any criminal allegation, the suspect remains innocent until proven guilty in court.
