Senegal and Morocco have set up a mouth-watering showdown in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final after grinding their way past two African giants in tense semi-final battles on Wednesday night.
In Tangier, Senegal edged Egypt 1–0 in a heavyweight North African–West African duel decided by a moment of class from their talisman, Sadio Mané. Later in Rabat, hosts Morocco held their nerve to knock out Nigeria 4–2 on penalties after a dramatic goalless draw that stretched deep into extra time.
Senegal silence Egypt, Mané delivers again
Senegal booked their place in Sunday’s final with a disciplined, mature display against seven-time champions Egypt. After dominating possession and territory for most of the match, the breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute when Mané struck clinically to send the Teranga Lions into raptures.
It was a performance that underlined Senegal’s balance and authority. Pape Thiaw’s side controlled the tempo, pressed aggressively and restricted Egypt to very little going forward, with Mohamed Salah and company barely testing the Senegalese defence until late in the contest.
For Mané, the goal was another chapter in an already legendary AFCON story. Speaking after the match, the Senegal star revealed the emotional weight of the moment, saying:
“This is my last AFCON and I hope to bring the cup back to Dakar.”
Once again, when Senegal needed leadership, it was Mané who stepped up.
Bounou the hero as Morocco break Nigerian hearts
If Senegal’s win was about control, Morocco’s victory was all about nerves of steel. Locked at 0–0 after 120 exhausting minutes against Nigeria, the Atlas Lions leaned on goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to carry them through a brutal penalty shootout.
Bounou produced two crucial saves, draining the confidence out of the Super Eagles, before Youssef En-Nesyri calmly slotted home the decisive kick to seal a 4–2 shootout win. The Moroccan crowd erupted as Nigeria’s AFCON dream came to a painful end.
Nigeria had their moments, defended bravely and fought hard through extra time, but once the contest went to penalties, Morocco’s composure told. It was another reminder that tournament football is often decided not by flair alone, but by mentality.
A final fit for Africa
The result sets up a blockbuster AFCON final between two of the continent’s most complete teams. Senegal arrive chasing history, hungry to add another title and possibly deliver a fairytale ending for Mané. Morocco, buoyed by home support and defensive resilience, will believe this is their moment to lift the trophy on home soil.
Egypt and Nigeria exit with pride but also with regrets, knowing fine margins separated them from the final stage.
One thing is certain: Africa is set for a final that promises intensity, quality and drama. Senegal versus Morocco, two heavyweights, one crown, and 90 minutes (or more) to decide who rules African football.
