HARARE – Former ZANU PF Chiredzi West legislator and Central Committee member Hon Farai Musikavanhu has died. He passed away early Wednesday morning at a Harare hospital, aged 64.

The death was confirmed by ZANU PF Masvingo Provincial Chairperson Robson Mavhenyengwa, bringing an end to the journey of a man widely known in political, farming and agribusiness circles.

According to reports, Musikavanhu died from suspected complications linked to throat surgery he underwent late last year. He had been receiving medical care in Harare in recent weeks.

A POLITICIAN ROOTED IN THE SOIL

To many in Chiredzi and beyond, Musikavanhu was more than a politician. He was a farmer at heart, an agronomist by training, and a strong believer in productive land use. Before entering frontline politics, he served as Agriculture Planning Director at Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe, one of the country’s biggest sugar producers.

After retiring from the corporate world, he ventured fully into commercial farming, dedicating more than 100 hectares to sugarcane production, while also mentoring young farmers and supporting out-grower initiatives in the Lowveld.

SERVICE, POLITICS AND COMMUNITY WORK

Musikavanhu served as Member of Parliament for Chiredzi West, where he built a reputation as a hands-on leader who understood rural livelihoods, irrigation challenges and the politics of land and production.

Through Puwevhu Enterprises, he was also known for philanthropy and community support, assisting schools, churches and vulnerable families. Party loyalists often described him as a disciplined cadre, deeply committed to ZANU PF and President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

PARTY DYNAMICS AND LATER YEARS

Within ZANU PF, Musikavanhu once held the position of Masvingo Provincial Secretary for Finance. However, political tides shifted. In 2022, he fell out of the provincial executive following internal party elections, alongside his ally Ezra Chadzamira, who lost the provincial chairmanship race.

He later lost the ZANU PF primary election for Chiredzi West to Francis Moyo, and the parliamentary seat was eventually won by Hon Blessing Makamure. Despite these setbacks, Musikavanhu remained active in farming, business and local development initiatives.

TRIBUTES POUR IN

Condolences have begun pouring in from party members, farmers, youth leaders and residents of Chiredzi, many describing him as a “hero of the soil” who believed politics must always feed the people.

His death marks the passing of a generation of leaders who straddled politics, agronomy and community development at a critical time in Zimbabwe’s history.
