A fresh political storm has erupted in Zimbabwe after UK-based lawyer Brighton Mutebuka alleged that journalist and activist Hopewell Chin’ono once sought to be appointed Harare Mayor following President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rise to power in 2018. It’s alleged Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa linked Chin’ono to the first family.
The explosive claim has emerged from an escalating war of words involving Mutebuka, journalist Jealousy Mawarire, and several opposition-linked figures, in a dispute that has now spilled into questions over Nelson Chamisa’s political legitimacy and alleged behind-the-scenes negotiations with the ruling establishment.
According to the latest claims, Chin’ono reportedly demanded the Harare mayoral position from President Mnangagwa as compensation for alleged public relations services rendered during the 2017–2018 political transition that brought the President to power.
Mutebuka, speaking in a lengthy public response, claimed that Chin’ono allegedly “stunned ED and his wife by demanding to be Mayor of Harare for his services.” The allegation has added fresh scrutiny to reported private negotiations said to have involved Chamisa, presidential aides, and intermediaries.
In one of the most direct verbatim claims, Mutebuka said:
“Hopewell allegedly stunned ED & his wife by demanding to be a Mayor of Harare for his ‘services.’”
The allegation has since been amplified by Jealousy Mawarire, who argues that the unfolding exchanges confirm that private talks between opposition figures and the ruling establishment did indeed take place. Mawarire said:
“You have now confirmed, as is contained in the audio, that the negotiations took place and that Nelson Chamisa and Hopewell Chin’ono were at the centre of them.”
At the heart of the debate is the claim that Chamisa was the link between Chin’ono and the First Family. Critics, however, are now openly questioning that narrative, asking how Chamisa himself could have served as the link if he had no prior connection to the First Family.
Hopewell Chin’ono also appeared to acknowledge his role in the discussions, stating verbatim:
“I confirm that (Chamisa facilitated the meeting). I do not know why these guys are pretending otherwise.”
That confirmation has injected fresh intensity into a debate that now stretches beyond personalities and into the heart of Zimbabwe’s opposition politics, constitutional reform battles, and the lingering shadow of alleged back-channel deals.
The controversy has been further heightened by Chamisa’s return to active politics after a two-year sabbatical. While his supporters say he is being deliberately tainted by political enemies, skeptics remain unconvinced.
Among the loudest critics is Mawarire, who believes Chamisa is a ZANU PF mole allegedly recalled to active politics to derail growing momentum around opposition to Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3.
Chamisa has strongly denied the allegations, while his allies insist the claims are part of a coordinated political smear campaign. Chamisa said:
“Fellow CITIZENS, I’m focused on the main show, finding a national solution to #CAB3, not distractions or sideshows. My leadership effort and focus is on our plans and a FRESH START path ahead. The die is cast. I say and act with integrity, purpose and in your best interests. Everything I do is grounded in accountability, responsibility, and the national interest. Ignore the sting operations and machinations meant to push a false narrative founded on malice and lies. God bless you.~Forever and always nc.”
The Constitutional Amendment Bill 3 has entered the public consultation phase as ZANU PF seems to be planning for a referendum if the legal channels falter.
