The Government of Botswana has firmly dismissed reports suggesting the presence of a United States military base within its borders, describing the claims as misinformation that risks undermining regional trust and stability.
In a statement issued on March 17, 2026, the Ministry for State President, Defence and Security clarified that Thebephatshwa Air Base remains a sovereign military installation fully owned, controlled, and operated by the Botswana government through the Botswana Defence Force.
“Botswana does not host a United States military base.”
The ministry said, moving to shut down speculation that has been circulating across social media platforms and political discourse in recent weeks.
Authorities explained that Thebephatshwa Air Base plays a critical role in strengthening Botswana’s national security infrastructure.
