Two Ghanaian Soldiers on a United Nations peacekeeping mission have been critically injured after their base in southern Lebanon was hit by missiles amid intensifying fighting between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

The soldiers are part of Ghana’s contingent serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a peacekeeping mission deployed along the tense Israel-Lebanon border to help maintain stability in the region.

In a press statement issued from Burma Camp in Accra, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed the attack on their base. Read the statement seen by ZiGoats.com:

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that as a fallout of the current on-going IDF and Hezbollah exchanges in Southern Lebanon, the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters in United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL), Lebanon came under two missile attacks between 1745 and 1752 hours local time today.”

The attack highlights the growing dangers faced by international peacekeepers as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalates once again along the volatile border region.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that two soldiers were critically injured during the missile strikes, while another soldier was left traumatised by the incident.

“Two soldiers are critically injured, while one other has been traumatised.”

The attack also caused significant damage to the battalion’s facilities.

“Additionally, the Officers’ Mess facility also got hit and has been burnt down completely.”

Military officials say the injured soldiers are currently receiving medical care as emergency evacuation plans are being arranged.

Troops Take Shelter As Fighting Intensifies

Despite the attack, the Ghana Armed Forces reassured the public that the rest of the troops stationed at the base remain safe.

“The Ghana Armed Forces assures the general public to remain calm amidst the fragile situation as troops are currently safe in underground bunkers.”

The strike comes as Israel continues to launch air and artillery attacks on Hezbollah targets across southern Lebanon following a fresh wave of rocket fire toward northern Israel.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has flared repeatedly over the past two decades, but recent exchanges have intensified as the wider regional crisis continues to unfold in the Middle East.

Hezbollah, a powerful Iran-backed armed group and political movement based in Lebanon, has been exchanging fire with Israeli forces along the border, raising fears of a broader regional war.

Israeli strikes have targeted Hezbollah infrastructure, while rocket attacks from southern Lebanon have triggered retaliatory operations by the Israeli military.

Ghana Lodges Protest At United Nations

Following the missile strike on its peacekeepers, the Government of Ghana has formally protested the incident through diplomatic channels.

“Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has protested the unfortunate incident at the United Nation’s HQ in New York and urged the parties involved in the conflict in UNIFIL to be mindful of their responsibilities regarding the safety of all peacekeepers in the theatre.”

The Ghana Armed Forces statement was signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Navy, Acting Director General of Public Relations.

The incident once again highlights the risks faced by UN peacekeepers stationed in some of the world’s most volatile conflict zones, where escalating hostilities can quickly place international troops directly in harm’s way.
